I mean I’m not saying it’s true in the room or making excuses but I am currently sick for the 2nd time in a month and I’m not cutting weight or being in close proximity to a bunch of other people every single day. This winter has been the worst in the last 5-6 years weather wise so it’s not an unlikely circumstance.
Rewatched the dual last night. Block was noticeably sluggish and MC was spent by the end of his match. They were both battling something. Nasir couldn't focus on anything but the finger, which looked pretty bad. I knew he was done when that happened unfortunately.

It seems the biggest issue of all may be teaching chain wrestling (and technique). Were the Brands good at that? It’s been so long, I don’t remember? I just remember them having a super high pace and attack rate and endurance. And Morningstar was a defensive wrestler.

If TB doesn’t want to fire M* and Telford can he move them over to the HWC? Does HWC have the financial resources to absorb them?

Tom isn't gonna make excuses. It was obvious watching that guys were sick. Dean hasn't wrestled in awhile and he's not hurt 🤷. They sure looked good last week do people think some forgot how to compete over the course of a week?
I’m sure you can understand the frustration when we heard the same story multiple times already this year.

Wisconsin… sick.
ISU… sick.
PSU… well I don’t think anyone said sick but that sure made us all sick.

Why has no one done media training with him in the last 20 years?
I feel for him. No fun facing the media, week after week, after another uninspired team performance.

I do wish he were a better spokesman for the team. So much reliance on meaningless coach-speak. All delivered in the voice of a drill sergeant: "We need to score more points." "We need to wrestle the full seven minutes." Yeah, no kidding. Why isn't it happening?

There's rarely any subtlety or nuance to his analyses. We all garble sentences from time to time but he seems to do it a lot. I've often wondered whether his manner of speaking has negatively impacted how he relates to recruits and their parents.

Not looking to kick a guy when he's down but a slightly softer, more thoughtful approach in public would go a long way.

You have watched all these guys wrestle many times. When guys who don't normally get tired are struggling it's usually a sign that something is off. Iowa lost 6-4 matches and didn't have 125 184 and a true freshman at 197. The only match that didn't go as expected was 149 and everyone is on suicide watch

It was expected Iowa would get majored by a lower ranked guy at 157? And we weren’t exactly huge favorites at 125 and 184 even with those guys.

Something is “off” all right…

I think some imagined a far different result at 141 and 157.

This is spot on. If you watch enough of these Pressers they always tend to be the same and are so tense. A few other lines that I cringe when hearing:

“We need to be ready”

“We are moving onto…..(Whatever is next on the schedule)”

“We need to get better”

New blood is needed in the assistant room & that cannot & must not be ignored any longer. Mstar & telford bring absolutely nothing to the table as far as development & progression go & their contracts are up after this year. There are so many great solid options out there that would jump at the opportunity to work at wrestletown & get our guys back where this program belongs. If Tom doesn't see that & won't make that change than Beth needs to step in do whats necessary

Covid is very high in Iowa right now:

1 in 27 people in Iowa is infectious right now:

You can monitor the wastewater levels for each state and nationally at the website these images are from:

Covid-19 data

Each Covid infection damages your immune system and makes it more likely you'll keep getting sick, over and over again. This is true whether or not someone's vaccinated:

If you wear an N95 or higher number (N99, etc.) mask in public and you don't take it off/pull it down to talk to people or fiddle with it, you will be much less likely to get sick from someone else who isn't wearing a mask. It's like a condom - it doesn't work well/protect you if you don't wear it or keep taking it on and off.

You can get N95s from Amazon (3M is a good company to look for) for about $18 a box (less than $1/mask) and you can use them over and over until the elastic wears out. I've worn one every day for the last year due to medical problems and I haven't gotten sick with anything, not even a cold. I have been around people who have had Covid without showing symptoms, and I wore a 3M N95 mask and didn't get Covid. Masks work if you use them.

Not gonna name names here. Had a conversation with a former Hawk a few weeks back that also wrestled at another D1 school. He said Brands practices were always brutal like every single day. Pushing your body to the limit and then some every practice. Spoke highly of the coaches but was not thrilled with every practice being that way. It’s telling that year after year we have this certain “sickness” going through the room we also have the majority of guys flame out their senior years, at least the ones that went through with the Hawks for the 4-5 years of college and also why we have numerous guys get injured during the season and are limping into nationals every freaking year. I felt that way about the overtraining for years now and having that conversation didn’t change my perspective, it only made me more sure of my thoughts. I don’t believe I am in the minority here with those thoughts. But I am sure the half dozen insiders on here will tell me I am just a “casual fan” and know nothing…

That should be obvious.
MSU158…
Now that was good. I love you guys so much!

With that said, a lowly peon like me would never be a consideration and I wouldn’t want that job anyway. Being responsible for Brands ending wouldn’t be something I want any part of and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be tied to Iowa’s success, or lack there of, after…

Well if they're sick then forfeit the F'ing match! That's a hell of a lot better option than watching whatever it is they're doing out there, it sure as hell isn't wrestling.

Most of these guys have been sick all year apparently. And every time they trot out there with their mediocre wrestling, their mediocre ranking and mediocre seed drop like a F'ing anchor.

Once again, 6 guys in the lineup failed to get one F'ing takedown, and multiple got MAJORED, at Home, to a **** Gophers team. How in the hell does this keep repeating itself? Pathetic.
Agree. Its funny as often as the team is sick they never pass it on to the opponents for the following week! Havent heard snother program getting sick ever let alone often like the hawks!

It isn’t the assistants. It’s systematic.

Who got tired that normally doesn't? Mikey got tired bc Sparks is actually good and MC let it all hang out for 7 mins giving everything he had going for a tech. Plus that match had some very long scrambles that might normally be stalemated earlier.
Block has gassed in multiple matches this year, including recently against Zargo where he was completely smoked by the late 2nd period and had nothing in the 3rd.
Bailey and Williams have gassed out and had nothing in the 3rd multiple times this year.
PK has had multiple matches like last night where he couldn't put away far inferior opponents bc he's gassed.
I've never seen it like this for an Iowa team before this year, not at multiple weights in multiple matches.

The larger point you might not realize you're making is this dual didn't end that far off from what it looked like on paper.
That in itself is a huge red flag as to the state of the program.

To me it looks like we've overcorrected this year which absolutely wouldn't surprise me.

I think you are looking a little too closely at the micro. Zoom out a bit. Just because you expected things to be this bad doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem that they are this bad.

Still a notch above Manning.
