Sick?

Maybe it's the new facility with no windows. No way for the germs to get out;)

I know I said last night that I'm tired of the sickness excuse. I was ready to plie on and say the Women are using the same facility and they're not sick, but that got me to thinking...

At the National Duals, NCC beat them, and several gals didn't look like themselves that weekend. And they did a lot of switching line-ups, which they always do because they have so much talent and need to get them matches. Their JV team could beat all but 2 or 3 programs in the country (much like PSU men). But it is very possible that they had some girls under the weather at various times this year. Maybe the new facility needs a good sanitizing.

As pointed out by someone earlier, there have been some nasty bugs going around Iowa this winter. I had one that messed up my whole body for two weeks. I was really sick for 2 or 3 days, but for two weeks it would have messed me up bad for something like wrestling.

Maybe I'm looking for excuses to give me hope, but another bug in the room is a viable explanation for the Jekyl/Hyde team performance from last week to this. Nebraska is head and shoulders above Minnesota in talent, and I find it hard to believe coaching or lack of motivation caused that difference.

Life is just so confusing these days. Nothing makes sense anymore.

You have watched all these guys wrestle many times. When guys who don't normally get tired are struggling it's usually a sign that something is off. Iowa lost 6-4 matches and didn't have 125 184 and a true freshman at 197. The only match that didn't go as expected was 149 and everyone is on suicide watch
So you were expecting Nasir and Williams to get majored?

I’m not gonna pile on Bailey for last night. His finger was bent the complete wrong direction 20 seconds into the match and he couldn’t use his hand at all. If we were wrestling MSU and it was a similar level opponent for him specifically they would’ve just injury defaulted. He was out there to preserve bonus points and not being able to grab anything with his hand did just fine.

Sickness excuse is old. This team hasn’t wrestled any differently the past 4 or 5 years. The mindset of sitting back and being satisfied with a 3-2 win or loss is the sickness Brands has brought to this team. Boring offensive wrestling. Probably lead the conference in stalls.

Assuming Beth has no experience in revamping a wrestling program, I assume she's going to need guidance/mentoring from someone to help her do it. Any ideas who will help her on this?

Covid is very high in Iowa right now:

1 in 27 people in Iowa is infectious right now:

You can monitor the wastewater levels for each state and nationally at the website these images are from:

Covid-19 data

Each Covid infection damages your immune system and makes it more likely you'll keep getting sick, over and over again. This is true whether or not someone's vaccinated:

If you wear an N95 or higher number (N99, etc.) mask in public and you don't take it off/pull it down to talk to people or fiddle with it, you will be much less likely to get sick from someone else who isn't wearing a mask. It's like a condom - it doesn't work well/protect you if you don't wear it or keep taking it on and off.

You can get N95s from Amazon (3M is a good company to look for) for about $18 a box (less than $1/mask) and you can use them over and over until the elastic wears out. I've worn one every day for the last year due to medical problems and I haven't gotten sick with anything, not even a cold. I have been around people who have had Covid without showing symptoms, and I wore a 3M N95 mask and didn't get Covid. Masks work if you use them.

Covid is so dangerous the price for the vaccine at CVS is $224 for self pay. 🤣🤣

I'd listen to Corby on this one. He is definitely not an Iowa fan trying to make excuses for a poor performance. No doubt about it.

Rumor is he has a congenital condition that causes his fingers to dislocate. Especially on his other hand. Anyone hear this?

This is spot on. If you watch enough of these Pressers they always tend to be the same and are so tense. A few other lines that I cringe when hearing:

“We need to be ready”

“We are moving onto…..(Whatever is next on the schedule)”

“We need to get better”
You forgot, “we need to score more points.”

Am I wrong, but Tom also seems to put the burden on the wrestlers, explaining what they didn’t do in general. But he doesn’t take a lot of ownership. Someone else (brilliantly) mentioned overtraining. How about, “Tom, have you considered that your training methods aren’t preparing the guys to be at their best on game day? Have you considered that you are over training?” Or Anything along those lines.

So tired of the wimps asking the questions who are afraid of asking actual, meaningful questions. Tom has them all intimidated.

I can’t imagine the guys are jazzed up about wrestling the next match when they listen to the pressers. I do imagine it’s a lot like, “the beatings will continue until morale/performance improves.”

This would make sense if it was a one off, our issue is we have seen this a lot the last few years. Typically it used to only be apparent vs top competition, now it's more oftten.

If anyone thinks this program is on the rise they are delusional.

This program is going downhill quickly.

I mean I’m not saying it’s true in the room or making excuses but I am currently sick for the 2nd time in a month and I’m not cutting weight or being in close proximity to a bunch of other people every single day. This winter has been the worst in the last 5-6 years weather wise so it’s not an unlikely circumstance.

Suspect your immune system is doing its job.

Haven't heard that, but have speculated that could explain the long-term taping of fingers on his other hand, and now maybe a concern on the other hand.

Tom isn't gonna make excuses. It was obvious watching that guys were sick. Dean hasn't wrestled in awhile and he's not hurt 🤷. They sure looked good last week do people think some forgot how to compete over the course of a week?
You’re kidding! They have one quality meet against Neb and you're talking like that’s the norm and Minny is the anomaly…that’s a joke. We’ve sucked several times this season let alone the past few years.

12,582 was the official number.
Not bad on a bitter cold night against a mediocre team, with apathy speading through the fan base. Even I made it to this one. Most teams would die for that. Even after Vteck add Bo and Melvin with Siedel and a few other young studs next year, you think they will draw that many, even if it’s their main rival NCST? I’m not sure if they have that many total wrestling fans.

Rewatched the dual last night. Block was noticeably sluggish and MC was spent by the end of his match. They were both battling something. Nasir couldn't focus on anything but the finger, which looked pretty bad. I knew he was done when that happened unfortunately.
Agree about Nasir, he was freaking out about the finger dislocation. He already can’t do much with the other hand, so I was wondering how he was going to beat a good opponent without gripping much with either hand. Block was the most shocking loss to me. Wasn’t surprised Williams lost, but didn’t expect him to get dominated after looking good against Taylor. Gabe had match I expected. Most of McEnelly matches end that way, with him winning.

was that tickets sold or actual attendance, because that would say there was more people there Friday than there was for Penn State (Attendance: 12530), and while attendance was poor for the Penn State match, it wasn't as bad as what I saw Friday.
Pretty sure attendance is “tickets sold.” So if you have season tickets and don’t show, that’s counted.

Put down the koolaid and get real. I’m tired of excuses after every poor performance.
