If we have pulled Bolden's offer that means we have 17 player committed or signed, if my math is right.

I figure State signs 26-27 this year. That leaves 9- 10 spots open. Other than Newton, Thompson, Wells, Griffin, Robinson, Humphrey, and Mason, who are the other 2-3 spots for?

I listed Mason. Also I forgot about King. So it looks like 2 other spots open. I wonder who the two others would be.
I don't follow it close enough to know who the Phillips guy is.

Jay Hughes, Jameon Lewis, and Jamerson Love will all 3 probably end up at CB, but I would really like for us to sign a guy that only plays corner in high school. I think its like part of the early blocking problems Heavens and Bumphis had. They played other positions like QB and RB in high school, and as they transition to WR at the college level, they haven't worked a lot on some of the other things WR's do besides catching passes. I think its the same with corners. You play QB or RB in high school, and you transition to corner in college and you haven't really worked much at corner, so you come in a little behind. Would have been nice to have been able to sign Sloan or Trimble.</p>

BDJ said that he was just offered by Alabama but MSU is his top school. As long as we get Newton and Wells, everything else is gravy as far as this class. I would also offer Newton's roomate (Chad Froenchite, however you spell it) to sweeten the deal. It's odd that we haven't offered him, unless Mullen knows that Newton is coming regardless.

But they were still both primarily WRs in high school. That excuse won't work.

Now you could say they're not used to blocking cause they were the ones getting the ball a ton in high school. That would be feasible.

I don't know about spot duty, but my point is they were they guys that were usually the ones handling the ball most of the time, and they had some blocking problems in the beginning parts of the season due to the fact they never really needed to work on blcoking for their high school team. But with the type of guys that we are starting to recruit, these fast smaller type WR's like Bumphis and Chisholm, there will be a little of that. But we have a good blend I think. Some speed guys like Bumphis, Heavens, and Chisholm, then some true WR's like Johnson and Johnson.

with Sanders, Newton,Robinson, Wells, Griffin, Mason, Thompson, Humphrey, and King for sure offered that makes 9.

I know there are back up plans but, perfect world, if you sign these nine, or 8 of these nine, is that it or is there someone else?

I know Bumphis lined up at RB and QB some, so he played all over. He probably practiced at 3 different positions in high school, which would significantly take away some of his time from practicing the WR position. Now in the end, it really didn't matte because he did a fantastic job. But at corner, you get exposed more. That's why I would really like to add a true corner to our commit list instead of a bunch of converted RB's, or in Jameon's case, a converted QB.

on campus. He was the offensive threat in HS, so pass protection was really never an option for him. Thus, he really sucked at it. I agree that it's better to sign a hs cb, rather then an athlete and try to turn him into a cb at the collegiate level unless you have time (year or 2) to get him ready. Hardest and lonelest postion on the defensive side.

how many "true" corners there are in high school who only play that one position. If the guy is good enough for a D1 scholly, he will be playing just about every snap whether on offense or defense. These guys are simply "athletes" who in high school can play a number of positions....example, Jay Hughes, Jamerson Love, etc.

Edited to add a couple more examples....Kaleb Eull's, QB for Yazoo County and Cordell Giles, QB for Ray Brooks. I don't think Tyler has anything to worry about from these 2.....unless, of course, he's running from them once they hit campus and join the defense.

They toyed with moving Bumphis to running back for his senior year, but they didn't do it. He played receiver.

your best athletes are going to be playing all over. Especially at small schools when your best guy can't be a corner, he's got to be a RB and a LB, needed everywhere.

Like Stallings said, if you recruit for need you'll end up broke. He says the only needs you have is QB and OL, then get the best players you can after that.

i think you're right about high school corners...especially in MS, high schools didn't throw the ball much until about 10 years ago and i think maybe Oak Grove started that trend in MS.. 10 years or so ago they had a bunch of whiteys but they were successfull because they were able to throw the ball...usually your corners in high school are fast guys with not as much athletic ability as your safetys..(ie they can't catch, they're small, and don't like contact). I think MS high schools are catching on to this because they see a school like Oak Grove having success throwing the ball and you see an all white team like MUS in Memphis beat South Panola, i really believe it's because they can take advantage of piss poor Db's at the high school level.

It has nothing to do with what position they played in high school. Most of them were super stars (on their team) in high school so they never had to or were never taught to do these things.
