If you can sanitize your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, why can't face mask, gloves and gowns all be sanitized and used again?

Simple answer

Because they deteriorate and lose their usefulness. Seems pretty obvious.

I understand but they have to be better than a fringing bandana.
I can't imagine rubber gloves losing their usefulness that quickly.

I heard one report that some places are doing that but it's against protocols because as pointed out they lose effectiveness but they have no other options at this point.

I think maybe exposing them to UV light might be less damaging to the material than alcohol or water, but just normal prolonged use will wear down the material. That might be fine for dust or some allergens but for this virus every nanometer matters.
