Marvin was a helluva entertainer and all, but I can't stand it when performers make the National Anthem "theirs." Just sing it as it was written.

I'm no fan of Whitney's usual stuff, but she nailed it at the 1991 Super Bowl:

Agree. Give it your signature, but don't stray from Francis Scott Key.

Whitney was great. The only other celebrity I've seen sing it worth a #*$^& was Harry Connick Jr.

With our new sound system and all, I'd like to see somebody singing the National Anthem with the Famous Maroon every game. A good singer, and there are good singers everywhere, adds a lot.

just saying I love his music, but I agree it should not be changed so much. At least he didn't change the words like the recent "black national anthem" . That was another slap in the face to none black Americans to me.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock yet.

It was awesome to watch the video and see all the hippies standing there with their mouths wide open.

Plus, when was the last time the Star-Spangled Banner transitioned into Purple Haze?

...and one that comes close is the National Anthem performed by Toni Seawright before one of MSU's games in 1991. I thought she nailed the song, and there are times when I think that Toni's version was better than Whitney's.

Best by Far... Maybe a close second to Rosanne Barr

That's the 2nd most un-American thing I've ever read. Why do you hate America? The Star Spangled Banner is a pretty ****** national anthem. "America the Beautiful" is my preference.

Talk about a "Germans" moment... Key wrote the words, not the music.

Didn't Kate Smith do that after singing "God Bless America" before Flyers games?</p>

1I know the thread is a year old, but I thought it deserved the bump. Of course, I might be biased since I started the thread.

A blast from the past (1991)with another selection for the wierdos that might prefer some Sousa over a re-written English drinking song.

I doubt the original score still exists, but we could logically reason that the way it was sung up until the urban craze took over would be close. I don't think F.S. Key wrote in any warbles (sp?)

Here is the entire poem entitled "The Defense of Fort McHenry."

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

isn't this song, like, the opposite of the Star Spangled Banner? Just sayin.

P.S. Tom Morello is a guitar god.
