I thought this would be a fun topic of conversation for the history buffs around here. I was reading a magazine article about a high school powerhouse in another state. And the title of the article mentioned that the school was in its "Golden Hour". It's a reference to how the Sun iis viewed right before it sets. The symbolism is quite striking.
That program is in a single high school district and has won multiple state titles and had an undefeated 2024. They may be favored to win it all in 2025 and 2026 as well.
But due to immense growth in their area, a second high school was approved to be built and will open in 2027.
So the article talks about the days of a singular high school being the heartbeat of a community are fading away and how the Sun is about to set and a new era is about to begin.
This is where I turn to you guys. Are any of you aware of this type of scenario where a single high school in a county of city served as the heartbeat of the community and was THE football powerhouse in the state or classification and then a second high school opened up and then changed the dynamics?
Those are the rules of this thread. Not a third, fourth, fifth high school pulling from a second, third, fourth high school. I know it's tough since Virginia has become more transient over the years, but I'm hoping there's a clear example of one or two schools which fit the bill.
Put those thinking caps on!
