The Al is a little tougher than the NL. not to mention the AL East

Still impressive though

with that one. Sure he struggled but they're allowing Brad Penney to do even worse. Maybe Smoltz is simply more suited for the National League. Of course, the Padres lineup is a great one to build confidence on.

He has had a few reclamation jobs before and turned them around.

One thing I noticed from watching the highlights- Smoltz seemed to use his split fingered fastball to get hitters out more, and his slider was a lot sharper than before with the Red Sox.

it has more to do with him facing the worst hitting team in MLB. welcome back to the NL.
It's still the MLB. Even if it is against a ****** team, they are still professionals.

me a break. san diego has one hitter on their team worth a ****, and he get's walked half the time. look, i'm sorry i dissed your beloved cardinals (best MLB franchise eVER) but facts are facts. san diego blows. sorry if i don't believe having a decent outing (not even a quality start) against them means your pitching coach is God.

I'm a Cubs fan, I'm just stating a fact that he pitched a good game against another team of professionals. How is that a stupid argument?

You might as well say a defense shutting down a Croom offense is the same as shutting down USC. They are both D1 teams after all,

Yeah they are professional and they are clearly some of the worst professional batters he could have faced. It was a glorified rehab start.

What you're saying can't compare to what I'm saying. There are like 30 or 32 teams in the MLB, and they get payed to play baseball for a living. There are over 100 teams in D1 football, and not many of them end up becoming "professionals." Sorry, but that's just not a good way to look at it, and I'm gone, sorry I don't have the time to argue about this all night. This is my opinion, and I'm sorry if you don't like it. You can kiss my *** for all I care. Yea, Pittsburgh sucks, but they are professionals, and Smoltz's pitches looked damned good.

you're right. san diego is badass. after not even getting a quality start against the best team in the world, clearly smoltz is the best pitcher in the universe.

You're the %+%+*%% idiot I made one statement about Smoltz pitching a good game and trying to give him credit even though it was against the Padres. Where in the hell did I say Smoltz was the best pitcher in the universe. I was just backing up my opinion when you idiots criticized it. Y'all need to chill the %$++ out. Drink a beer or something. I could care less about Smoltz. Y'all have nothing better to do than try to stir up **** against somebody just stating an opinion. That's sad.

calm down sally. i'm not the one that called you an idiot. i think it's pretty easy, from reading all of the posts in this thread, to see who is the one that needs to calm down. you're the one that acted like his performance was awe-inspiring. i just stated it was a joke against the worst offensive team in MLB. it wasn't even a quality start. but then again, i'm pretty sure you don't even know what a quality start is.

When did I say it was awe-inspiring? Also, I know what a quality start is since I was a catcher to the JUCO level. Not saying that is something great, but I have knowledge of baseball.

I thought his stuff looked really, really good. His velocity on his fastball was there. His slider looked good, and his split fingered fastball looked good.

NOW that said- yes it was San Diego. Yes, they are bad. Yes, they are AAA caliber except for Adrian Gonzalez. And yes, the jury is still out at this point.

But, considering how he pitched for the Red Sox and how he looked today, I would have to say it's pretty encouraging.

He threw a ton of junk out of the strikezone that they chased after. I want to see him against more disciplined hitters.

If my math is right and LaRussa doesn't mess with the rotation, his next two starts will be against the Nationals and the Pirates. But after that, his next start will be against the Braves, which will be interesting. And weird.

San Diego can pay me to play right field tomorrow and I would be considered a professional. I doubt I could hit anything Smoltz throws, probably even BP.

he only gave up 3 hits, It doesnt matter who he's playing when you're talking about a guy that had an ERA that costs more than the buffet at Cici's

Not to mention. If you want to go with stats against ****** teams. Here are his stats from his first start of the year on June 25th AGAINST THE NATIONALS - where he pitched 5 innings as well

5.0 IP 7H 5ER 5k

So, as you can see. 2 ****** national league teams and there's a vast difference.

If they had better pitching they would be a much better team than what their record indicates but I mean don't let facts get in the way.

I'm not saying that he hasn't turned it around I just find it a little too early to be confident in his abilities that's all. If Lohse comes back off the DL healthy in September I would like to see Smoltz go to the bullpen to be the setup for Franklin because Jason Motte is not doing it right now. You can throw 98 but after the first three time you throw it batters are going to tee off with the timing down.
