So, assume you are Stans. What do you do about Kodi's rant?

Even our peachiest poster would agree that an outburst like that cannot be tolerated this side of the NBA. So do you bench him? Maybe kick him off? Or perhaps actually play him more?

but Stansbury's substitutions during the game make me want to jump through the TV. I can't imagine what it does to KA. Watching freeking Randy Stewart play almost the whole game shooting his usual 2-9 (or whatever it was) pisses me off. But he just screwed himself

For years we sit on this board and talk about how Stans doesn't sub correctly, or the types of sets he runs, or how he doesn't adjust very well. Well all of that happened last night. We ran 4 guard sets while Kodi and Osby sat on the bench, we couldn't get our guards to get to the basket, and Stans didn't adjust at halftime on offense or defense. Someone needed to call him out, because that loss is on Stansbury and nobody else. We had no business losing that game, and now he has to figure out what he's gonna do moving forward, because with the talent on this team, we should have rolled in this game. We had no fight, and it looked like much of the guards didn't care. The one good thing I saw though is that Varnado played extremely well. He has definitely improved on offense and should average a double double every game.</p>

Really? You don't think it will cause problems? Really? The IQ on this board decreases exponentially after a loss.

Uhhh, someone that is not a player maybe. That is totally unacceptable. And it's not all Stans. While he coached a terrible game, Barry and our defense contributed to that loss.

My vote is to tell Kodi to go find something else to do with his time. Kick his *** off the team.

and shut the door. Nobody in there but me and him. And we would talk. Man to man. Not coach to player or anything else. Man to man.

I would give him the chance to say all he wants to say. At the end of the conversation, or maybe even during the conversation, I would calmly explain that:

1) I am the coach and the team is my sole responsibility. As long as the team is my responsibility, I will make the calls that I deem appropriate. I would also let him know that I realize that I'm not infallible. I'm human and some of my decisions will not be the optimal decisions. But, we still have to work together for the good of the team despite our human condition.

2) I cannot have insubordination on the team. There are consequences for that. I would calmly give him the consequences ( 1 - 3 game suspension). If he serves the suspension with some dignity, we'll go on as if nothing happened. If not, then there are consequences for that too.

My key goal would be to ensure that my player felt like he could come to me with his frustrations rather than taking them elsewhere. Kodi said that he felt that he couldn't do that several times last night. That's why I would give him a chance to talk and make a sincere effort to listen and understand. I wouldn't have to agree with him or do anything he suggests. But, having open lines of communication is a must when your success depends upon the performance of other people. If they don't feel that their input is welcomed or valued, then problems like this will arise over and over again. Actually, this may be the repeating of past mistakes because we didn't learn the lesson the first time - Gary Ervin, the Delks, Ben Hansbrough ....

Communication is the key.

Your old boss has probably gone through this situation several times in the past like I have. It's just a part of leading people.

Kicking the person off the team doesn't solve this problem. Changing your methods of dealing with it does.

And would this place Kodi in an inappropriate status with relation to his teammates and Assistant Coaches?

Man, we played ******. It's natural for people to be pissed. I think it's best to give as low-key a punishment as possible, privately use what Kodi has already expressed, and move on. I sure as hell don't want to kick a player off the team after one game. We just need to do better.

I'm sure Stans is pissed because besides the loss, he now has to deal with this. But that's why Stans is a Head Coach, and I think he'll handle it well.

In combination with us playing ******, Rider played a fantastic game. That's how upsets happen. Give the victor some credit.

That seems to be a pretty well put together discussion there. I agree with you on all points. Over the past few years I have made a point to observe folks bellyaching to Byrne for spending 6 mill on a jumbotron, faculty bitching about dept. head selection, folks bitching about Fogglesong being himself, etc....the one common theme is that the folks getting paid .25 Million dollars do a good job of at least listening and offering what appears to be an open line of communication. Ultimately, the opinions of the little guys don't influence decisions much, but they have to at least feel like they were heard out or else they become disillusioned.

The problem is that Coach Stans doesn't give a **** what Kodi thinks, and doesn't even pretend to. Therein lies the problem. That may be a bigger problem that has been repeated over and over. Lack of control and an odd blend of favoritism.

2006: Coach Stans to Ervin: "Gary, drive down the floor and initiate the motion offense."
2006: Ervin: "That sucks, I am driving into the lane to distrubute or throw up junk...."
2006: Coach Stans: "Goodbye Gary, I am the coach and I make the decisions."

2007: Ben Hans: "Coach, set me up a play to get open on a 3; I shoot the best %"
2007: Coach Stans: "Jamont, pass it to Hans on the wing"
2007: Jamont to Stans/Hans: "Suck it....I got this.....clank"
2007: Coach Stans: "Looks at floor......Goodbye Ben/Delk^2"

2008: Brian Johnson: "Coach, put in Kodi!"
2008: Coach Stans: "Shut up, I am the coach."

2009: Randy/Ravern: "Clank, Clank, Clank...."
2009: Kodi: "Please put in Turner @ 2/3 so we can win?"
2009: Coach Stans: "Shut up, I am the coach."

2009: Jacquise: "Turner's natural position is 2 and he should be starting."

Patterns kind of repeat themselves. Different players, same result. I hope like hell Sidney gets cleared. Osby will need to step up his game significantly as well. He is about to get a lot more minutes.

In my scenario, no. Because all of the players and assistant coaches would have that same opportunity. That would be my policy. I want them to bring all of the negative stuff to me. I wouldn't consider it criticism. I would consider it feedback and would use whatever I could to improve my performance and the performance of the team.

I don't think he could do that.

Don't get me wrong. I think your discussion points are awesome. I'm just not convinced that they would work in this situation.

I really think the punishment needs to be handled privately within the team and I don't think any thing more than the most general statements should be made by any team or AD officials about it.

And I do think Stans either needs to make sure his players understand his substitution pattern or alter it so it works better. And we definitely need a better offensive scheme agaiist the zone.

that I believe that this discussion has already taken place. I think that Stansbury had a heart to heart with Kodi immediately following last season, and he was given a chance to stay or transfer with no hard feelings. After the meeting, Kodi made up his mind to remain a Bulldog and frankly, I think that a lot of State fans were a little surprised.

Now, keep in mind that no one really has any idea as to how Stans laid it out for him behind closed doors, but the fact remains that they had the discussion. Therefore, the question is where does that leave him now? In my mind, I think you're right that he should be given a short suspension and allowed to play after this time if he handles himself well. However, this has to be the last straw. One more outburst in public like this and I have to think that Kodi is done.
