Mullen and Co. are probably feeling some pressure after the collapse. Hopefully this translates into a heightened sense of urgency .... in other words, no more laying down and quitting.

That "pressure" they might be feeling makes me even more uneasy. One more good pop in the mouth comparable to the Alabama game last year and what are they gonna do this time? Hopefully their attitude will be different, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Mullen hasn't really said anything that interesting, but I'm encouraged by how the players have been talking. They seem to have a different attitude about this season. Russell mentioned that this was the best offseason that he's been apart of at State. The team knows that the end of last year was bad, and they appear to be working hard to correct it.

Now saying it and doing it are entirely different things. Still, I have faith in Mullen and this team. I think we go to a bowl game, and with our very tough schedule that may be all you can ask for this season. Let's just get to a bowl game and win it to get some momentum moving toward 2014, which could be a very special year.

The beginning of last year wasn't that great either. That team never really played with much effort or heart. They're saying the right things this summer, but teams almost always say the right things this time of year. If they play as hard as the first 3 Mullen teams did, I'm pretty optimistic about this fall. If not, our season will end in November.

It's all about the defense to me. If they play soft, like they did much of last year, we're going to struggle to win 6 games. If they play with some edge, we should be atleast a 7 win team.

Dan used "sense of urgency" alot y'day in regards to the OSU game

Apparently there wasn't alot for the opener last year. Now lets see if this translates to playing better.

Many forget in our 7-0 start, how we struggled mightily at times (esp vs Troy).

Dan is either is on the cusp greatness for 2014 or looking at a new beginning after 14.

After reading this, not really...

“Last year Geoff had a lot of say in everything that we were doing on that side of the ball, to take over the coordinator role doesn’t change much. It is going to add a little bit of different personality, but schematically it’s not going to change very much what we do on the field.”

That's what he said about Wilson when Diaz left too. It's just coach-speak. We'll see this fall how much truth there was in it.

Well, that quote definitely changes the way I feel about our potential this season.....and it definitely changes the way I feel about our chances against OSU. Hopefully that was just an attempt to throw Gundy a curve ball or something.

I sound like Rocketdawg

...when I was a kid, back before the days of the internet. Every August I would ride my bike up to the corner store to thumb through the new issue of Athlons. Every year I looked forward to that magazine. However, every year it was the same ole disappointing prediction for us. Bulldogs last or next to last in the final standings.

i just really hate we play at Arkansas and at Auburn

After Dan's little Q & A session.

I think we are better than both of those teams again this year but you cant count those games as wins because they are away. Auburn has a 4 QBs competing for a starting spot and braking in a new offense and defense. Arkansas also has a new QB and only return about 6 starters from a terrible defense last year. We have potential to go 7-5 but it really comes down to if you think Mullen & Co. can win SEC road games other than winning in Lexington.

Shouldn't coach-speak do something to actually excite your fanbase as opposed to depressing them?

I sort of agree with you in the fact that there is a better chance that we lose one or both of those games due to them being on the road than beating a Bama or LSU because we get them in Starkville. Its gotten to where I hate wasting a damn home game on Bama which is a guaranteed loss no matter where we play.

Agree. The D has to be much better if we are to win 6+ games. I'm hoping the D will be better with Collins at the controls.

Not necessarily. One classic example of coach-speak is to talk up your opponent. It's more to avoid answering a question than it is to excite the fans. I doubt Mullen will say that tonight at the Extravaganza.

Mullen would be a fool to say anything will be different schematically to the media. Why give Gundy a heads up? The changes we make in D won't and shouldn't be talked about till you see them in a game. "Oh hi Mr. Gundy I just wanted you to have a heads up that we're going to blitz and play man to man press coverage on 1st downs. Sure you're welcome. So what kind of defense are you playing? Hello?...Hello? Dang he hung up."

I would say I like our chances at Arkansas. However, Arkansas may have things figured out by November. Also, it is their last home game and in Little Rock. They have a week off prior to us. We play Alabama the week before and OM 5 days later. It will be around the opening of deer season in MS, so we will have all of 100 fans there.....including the band.

I won't feel any better about this team or staff until I see...

us give a full throttle effort for 60 minutes. Until then....

Actually no, the opposite. Coach speak is intended to lower expectations, reveal nothing to your opponents, and provide no bulletin board material.
