So how long does Mullen get a pass?

Crooms got 3 years from the previous regime. I don't for one minute believe he would have gotten the same from Byrne. I figure Mullen will be given next season to make some drastic changes and the following season better show some significant improvements, especially on the offensive side of the ball. It won't really be that difficult to improve from where Croom left us on offense, based on the rankings, but simply improving offense and still losing games won't matter all that much to most fans if it lasts for three years.

What say you?

/my bad if this has been discussed. i have been in the woods more than on this board lately. and yes OM fans...i have grown out my winter beard.

But if his record after 3 years isn't any better than Crxxm's was, he won't be here for year 4. Not that I think for a second that his record after 3 years won't be significantly better than Crxxm's was.

We've gotten too used to Croom's definition of the word. He thought he had 3 years to <17> off, experiment with his fantasy offense and schemes, not recruit and still get paid, because "it was an impossible situation" anyway, so why try until after 3 years. <17> that and <17> Croom/LT/Lee for thinking that **** up.

I think as long as Mullen doesn't field a horrible offensive team and doesn't make absolutely stupid blunders time and time again, he'll get 4 years. If you are getting the best out of your team and working hard recruiting, the wins and bowls will take care of itself.

I don't think any coach should get a "pass", but when you get down to it, a 3-4 win season will probably only be tolerated for one year.

That being said, I think Mullen will win at least 4-5 games each year, even in the bad years.

He should and will get 3 years regardless. You have to give a coach 3 years at least if for no other reason than to let future coaches know that you're going to give them at least a fair shake. And you really need to give 4 unless things are so unorganized and awful that you have to get rid of a guy after 3.

We are beyond ******. Any improvement next year will be gravy. I'd be happy with 5 wins - even a mediocre coach could've won 5 this year even with our West **** Offense. 2010, I would hope to be able to get to a decent bowl (7-8 wins), and continue improving from there.

yeah i have definitely gotten way too used to the way the term pass was used by croom. it was definitely an impossible situation when you don't work all that hard.

also, it is very sad that the "bad years" were the "normal years" for croom. unreal.

even if mullen falls flat on his face i will be glad that state is at least trying to be proactive rather than being complacent.

of being a difficult place to win, being behind in talent, ect (whether right or wrong), I think he gets a minimum of 5 years. MSU can't afford to add "impatient unrealistic fanbase" to it's reputation and still expect to have any chance at decent coaches in the future. All bets are off if he wins less the 2 games multiple years.

That being said, I am cautiously optimistic about Mullen and do not think it will matter. </p>

We need to be improved- period. That may not necessarily translate into wins right away, but intelligent people can spot improvement. Just like I said with Crooms, by the end of year 3 we better be in a bowl (but I expect Mullen to do it by year 2)

Our coach and the way he ran **** was ******. We'll have to get that dumbshit "no-fun" attitude Croom instilled out the window first.

Take the egg bowl, Ole Miss players were having fun from the get go. They looked like they enjoyed playing football. Our team never looked like that during the Croom Era.

i hate to use MS Southern as an example but i am going to do it even though it may be at my own peril on this board. they won the last few games in a row and they did it with their new offense. it may come to pass that the end of our 2009 season will see things starting to click a bit for the offense even though the end of our season is a pretty rough schedule considering it includes Florida and Bama. i will be pleased with 4 or 5 wins and some signs of improvement at the end of the season.

damn it i hate being pleased with 4 or 5 wins.

and we all knew it over the past couple of years. We all knew Croom would not get it done, but we had talked ourselves into the fallacy that we really just sucked that bad and needed a decade to rebuild.

LT did a fantastic job of brainwashing.

And just for the record, Coach34 was one of the vocal "intelligent" people throughout all the nonsense. Yeah I said it. But you're still stupid when it comes to Stans.

"LT did a fantastic job of brainwashing"
very similar to "doing things the right way" and "character." crooms' brainwashing of the sheep and amazingly of the players was probably his only real talent while here.

for making such a great hire. He said "Well, we will know in a couple of years."

I doubt that is a free pass for two years. The thing is that a free pass (no expectations at all) is ridiculous. Now, perhaps that's not what you meant by free pass. But, it is clear from Croom's interview that is what was mean for 3 years by the prior administration.

As long as he doesn't give excuses that insult the fan base, such as "If you can't see improvement your blind" quote, he will get all the support he needs from the fans to assist him in succeeding (patience).

"But you're still stupid when it comes to Stans."

after this season, Stans will have made the NCAA Tourney once in the last 4 years....Thats not getting it done in my opinion and I dont see how that can be called "stupid"

...1 year pass on improving the team.

One thing Croom did do is leave Mullen way ahead of the curve when it comes to the 2009 recruiting (signing) class.

For some reason the majority of the top players from MS want to sign with Miss. State this time around.

If Mullen screws this recruiting class up, he's an idiot.

As far as showing marked improvement, use the 2009 season to experiment & get the players coached up.

When the 2010 season rolls around, we'll be looking for Miss. State to field a real football team.

and plays postseason most every year. He has made MSU a destination in which top flight basketball talent seriously look towards each year. I don't want to be all "woe is MSU" but there's only so much you can ask for in an athletic program.

We should expect championships often in baseball, but I really only look for winning records and postseason play in basketball and football. Anything else is just gravy. I think that's a good combination of realism and ambition.

If we win, say, 14-10 or even lose, then the honeymoon is over. I want to see MState hang at least 50 on J-State.
