So I got 4 bears kicked out of chilis last night...

And it was in oxford. my wife and I went to Oxford this weekend to visit my recently married sister and her husband. Well it was getting about game time and my sister didn't have espnu, so my wife and I decided to go out to eat where we could watch both State and ole miss games. The wife was wanting Mexican but my bro inlaw said they wouldn't have TVs. I wasnt wanting to go to the square or any local places as they'd prolly be filled with drunk bears and didn't want to deal with all that especially since we were wearing our State shirts. So we left our lil 1yr old with my sister and bro-inlaw and decided to go to chilis.

We go in and get seated, waiter takes our order, tv with Espn (state game) is in front of me 20 minutes before kickoff and everything is going good. Our waiter was the nicest dude and I believe is gay ( this will make sense later). There is 13 TVs in this place and I was sure different games would be going on and I would get to watch State play and still check out the other games. Well a group of 4 come in about 10 minutes till kick off and sit in the booth right behind me ( they're prolly late 50's). A couple minutes later I hear one of them, who was a woman ask the waiter about the ole miss game. So when he walked by me I asked him and said that I know I'm in the minority here but I wanted to see if one of the TVs could stay on Espn so I could watch the state game. He said that was not a problem at all and that I could watch my game.

Game time. I hear the group behind me complaining to different waiters to turn it to the ole miss game. Well there is one tv in front of me and one behind me, both on the ole miss game now. Our waiter came back to our table and asked if we were doing ok, so I asked him about the state game that I was told I could watch. He said they were working on it and asked me if it was ok if they put it on the tv behind me, I said that was fine and I just moved over to the other side of our booth so now the other tv would be in front of me, no big deal.

One of the managers came out and turn the om game to the state game on the tv I was promised. Yay! Well that didn't sit well with the group of 4 that came in earlier. They complained to the waiters and asked for the manager to turn the game. Manager told them that we requested that game and they were going to leave it for us since there was 13 TVs and about 10 playing the om game. Group of 4 got pissed and complained for about 30 more minutes. They started asking people at other booths if they'd rather watch the om game...like they'd say no. They were trying to get people on their side and maybe that would help their cause. They told the manager that we need to go to Starkville if we wanted to watch that game and that if they were in Starkville that the chilis there wouldn't let them watch the ole miss game.

Meanwhile the wife and I are enjoying our meal and watching both games, as I could easily turn around and see the bear game behind me. Well there is a commercial during the state game so I turn around to see what was happening at the bears game. The lady that has been complaining takes my picture while I'm turned around. Next thing I know the cops come in and stand by their table and ask them to leave because they have been cussing or something like that. Group of 4 said not until they get their money back. Wife and I are kinda smiling a lil bit as they are telling the manager and police that they have a picture of us watching the om game instead of the state game. Group of 4 said it wasn't fair because they go there every weekend and it's their town. The lady then says that she used to be a secretary at an attorneys office and that she was gonna do something about it.

They bring them their money and the cops escort them out. A guy in the booth beside me said sarcastically "they got your picture watching tv" we both laughed. Our waiter came back and apologized and he felt bad for us and was embarrassed. We hade several waiters and waitress's come by telling us we were good customers and apologized for everything. We got to talk to the manager and told her how great the service was and everyone was outstanding employees she had working for her. She said we were wonderful and would love to have us back. Well the waiter that I been talking about came up to me and said that he had been picked on a lot growing up and that it brought him a little joy seeing people like that go down. I could be wrong but it seemed like he might have not taken the om football players incident from earlier in the week so well. He said he wanted to buy us desert and that we were welcome to stay there as long as we wanted. So long story short, we got 4 bears kicked out of a restraunt in their own town without even saying a word to them, just because we wanted to watch the State game.

While we got a laugh out of this I do want to give props to the manager and employees there. They were A+. I know we could use some of that in Vegas.

Nothing warms my heart more than stupid people getting what they deserve. They were picking on you guys because they believed that no one would give one crap about your money in an Oxford restaurant.

It just goes to show, some people take this **** way too seriously.

/the "I used to work for a lawyer" bit was the best part. Who in Oxford hasn't worked for a lawyer at some point?

great story. some people thinking the have a right over you for reason x is hilarious. you are a customer, they are a customer....whats the problem. as a state fan living in oxford, i will make sure to show them appreciation with my business. ill share that with a few fellow bulldogs in town.

on the other side of the spectrum, the oxford obeys is (oddly enough) NOT bulldog friendly, at least in some cases. my wife's cousin is a younger high school kid that was visiting oxford for some camp or event or something....anyway, he had a state shirt and hat on. the group went to eat at obeys. well, it turns out, one of the employees would not serve the kid until he took off his msu hat and shirt. the kid was like 15 years old at the time, so he capitulated to be with the group, but he was really embarrassed he got singled-out like that. what adult would do that **** to a kid? per his account, the worker was being totally serious. as a starkville born business, thats one of the last places i expected to hear a story like that.

Way to stand up to those bullies (emphasis on small "b"). Personally, if there's a ton of TV's in a restaurant I WANT one TV to be on my rival's game.....just to keep up with it. It's definitely better than if the game was Ball St.-Army.

That's ridiculous. There's nothing I love more than talking **** to people I know about sports/rivalries/whatever else I can think of. I cannot imagine what makes people think that just because someone went to/cheers for another school, then you get to treat them like trash. Especially if it's someone you've never met. Who does that?

I'm ashamed of our fans that act like that, and I'm sorry that happened. Also, you are a much more patient person than I.

No kidding. I would have lost it. Don't feel bad, every fan base has morons like these. I love the "I know a lawyer" bit.

That is surprising about Oby's in Oxford because it's owned by a proud Bulldog. He obviously wasn't there at the time because I can assure you that's not his policy. Too bad you don't know the employee's name...I"m sure the owner would like to know.

My brother manages a restaurant in Jackson. Auburn weekend, family of OM fans are eating. They are being loud, chanting War Eagle, etc. keep in mind OM/Texas game is on at the same time and OM is losing when they get up to leave. They watch the final auburn TD, and start going crazy and slapping high fives like they're auburn fans. My brother has to sit there and endure it with a smile on his face, and as they are walking out of the door, the little girl, who appears to be 9 or 10 says, " but Daddy, don't you want to stay and see the look on their faces when they lose?"

I would have paid a lot of money to see that family's face Saturday night.

Stupid people do stupid things. It's not relegated to Ole Miss fans. I've seen State people do the same thing in Jackson. Recently had some State fans go to a place to eat and watch an Ole Miss game and then try to start "Maron, Whit" cheers when the opponent scored. Really, who does that?

Went to upstate New York this weekend to an apple orchard with the fam. Wore a State polo (3 different people approached me and said they went to MSU... Odd place to meet a fellow bulldog) and some ******* and his girlfriend called me over when I was leaving and said they were from Texas and went to Ole Miss blah blah they wanted us to beat LSU and it was the only time of the year they pull for us. Real rivals.

I saw a few State fans at Disney week before last. They were from Hattiesburg. Very nice people. They weren't wearing MSU gear, but came up and spoke upon seeing my OM gear. We both wished each other good luck on the season, small talked, and that was it. Most of our conversation revolved on how nice it was seeing polite MS folk after being surrounded by rude Euros and yankees all week.

I don't know that I ever have these bad church, work, and restaurant experiences that others have, but I'm sure some of it happens.

My family eats at Oby's in Oxford on average about once a week. I have either a State hat or a State shirt on for most of these visits. I have never encountered any rude behavior. The owner is a great Bulldog fan. Also, Oby's hosts State's Send-Off Party almost every year.

i eat there monthly and have seen multiple state fans in gear before with nothing said to them, including those in my party, but i was sharing an experience (much like that of the op's) of a negative reaction based on fanhood inside an establishment of a rivals city. the fact remains that the story was told to me and i further alluded to my disappointment that anything would happen like this in a starkville born business. even if it happened once, once is too many times. im not questioning the loyalties of the owner. that said, he had zero reason to make the story up, so i for one believe him regardless of anyones opinion about the validity of the story. again, my own experiences are quite contrary to his, but it still was unfortunate that he had that experience.

I watched the MSU/Auburn and Texas/OM games from BWW in Oxford. Was up there working at deer/duck camp that weekend with a bunch of buddies(all present were OM fans). Had no negative experience whatsoever. Of course, the place went crazy on the winning Auburn TD and those around us gave me a hard time, but it was expected to me and not mean-spirited or bothersome at all...

I've been to Oxford a million times and never had a negative experience. Even getting wasted wearing maroon in club level has never been a problem...

I know negative experiences happen everywhere -- and glad to see you got a reasonable resolution -- I just wanted to make it even more clear than you already have that the type of experience is certainly outside the norm...

Any idea who called the police? The manager perhaps?

In your writeup, you didn't mention any cursing, other than to say that's what the police said when they asked them to leave. Were they?

I honestly don't know who called or if they cussed to the manager. I was trying to watch our game while they were going back and forth with the manager. They weren't overly loud, just real rude. The waiter did say they had problems with them before and are probably going to ban them from coming back, idk how that works.
