So is Relf our quarterback of the future?

and possibly the present? I just recently realized he is just a sophomore, for some reason I thought he was a journeyman senior but I guess I was considering him and Tray Rutland as the same person. Seems like Mullen is really high on him and helping him realize his potential and he is just waiting for a few good passes in a row before naming him the starter. Thoughts? or more information?

for now. I don't see him ever being the QB of the future but nonetheless things change. I just think Relf being bigger in size and over 6 feet makes him the guy the coaches value the most especialyl with the defensive lines that we will be up against (and pulverizing our qbs). We are going to need the size and durability from someone like him if we are going to accomplish redshirting Russel this season. which I think is apparent and the goal of our coaching staff.

I'm just hoping Relf is good enough to allow Tyler Russell a redshirt season. And I hope he does a good job with the run-oriented packages that Mullen let's him run.

If by the middle of the year he is your best QB is it still the goal to redshirt him? I agree that it should be, but thought all along that it probably wouldn't be based on what I have read on this board. I know it all will depend on the development of the other QB's relative to Russell. This whole situation sets itself up to possibly being an interesting decision that Mullen has to make. I wish Russell the best. I understand he is a good kid.

The goal is always to win and succeed and build the program, so by that mentality you don't worry about using a 4-star QB because you plan on having another one waiting in the wings by the time he's a senior.

A guy like him is always going to be far more valuable as a 5th year senior than as a first-year freshman. So unless he is FAR better than the QB you have now, it's foolish to waste him in a year like this. I just don't see how he's going to win us any more games than Tyson Lee will this year.

obviously beggars can't be choosers. But just looking at who Mullen is recruiting tells you he is not looking for a pure pocket passer (like Russell). It is obvious mobility is one of his top priorities in a QB. But I guess everyone wants a QB who is tall, smart, good arm, and extremely mobile.

I really think it is Mullen's goal. This is all a matter of opinion but I think he wants to save Russel from playing this year. He has been very quiet about him so far and he only mentioned 3 of our freshman that will be guaranteed heavy playing time.
The fact is we are very short on depth at QB and will be after the season after Lee's departure. Redshirting Russel is probably ideal for most coaching staffs and with our situation it does look unrealistic but I think Relf gives us the best opportunity to if he can become a reliable passer. And like Virgil said Relf is a sophomore so developing him would better for us in the long run over Lee with the fact Lee is tiny and done after this year.

If Mullen plays Russel in the very first game then that answers the redshirting question rather quickly.

I thought to myself, "17." Hopefully I am wrong about Chris Relf, but I have little faith in the guy who couldn't beat out the other Croom quarterbacks. He did look like he had improved a lot in the spring game.

perform under pressure. I can see that his size would play to his advantage in a running type zone read and I'm sure that's what's brought him to the fore front here lately. I just hope he's a threat with his arm. I'm not a fan of the 2 QB system when one guy comes in and you know he's going to run it, the only question is right, left or up the middle. Now before anyone yells Tebow, remember this, we don't exactly have the kind of O-Line that Florida had a couple years back when Tebow came in for short yardage. Based on reports, he's evidently improved alot on his passing so I guess we'll see. I've just got the feeling though that it won't be too far into the season that the reigns will be handed over to Russell. I hope for his redshirt's sake that I'm wrong but if after the 2nd or 3rd game, neither Lee or Relf are cutting it to Mullen's liking, I think he puts him in there.</p>

If we redshirt Russell, then Relf will be our only QB next year with any playing experience.
