rouser is right in that they asked Cut to present a plan. His plan was to stay status quo, and we would improve, which was basically a 17 you to the administration for asking. They were expecting staff changes of some sort. Cutcliffe forced their hand. That's why it took more than a week for them to go through meetings with him before they eventually fired him. If firing him was the plan all along it would've happpened a few days following the Egg Bowl at most. They wanted to give Cutcliffe a year to turn things around, but they wanted to see changes that were going to make that happen. He gave them nothing. The worst part about that is that we went into a coaching search late in the game with no plan and an appearance that we weren't patient. It was a recipe for disaster, and it landed us a disaster.
Boone doesn't want that to happen again, so he's giving Nutt the freedom to make his own decisions. He's even come out publicly and said so.
I would guess that if Nutt keeps the entire staff together Nutt will have given himself an even shorter leash next year. I think he could give himself some leeway for a poor season next year if he'd make a lot of changes. Some in this thread have suggested that he would be trying to buy a 5th year by giving himself some heads to cut off after the 2011 season, if it doesn't go well. I think just the opposite would be the case. Nutt hasn't been given the ultimatum publicly, but I think he knows he can't have a repeat in 2011, and I'm pretty sure that's been made clear. I think 2011 is his do or die year, and if he thinks he can turn it around with this staff, it's his choice. He gets to decide what it is going to take to turn it around. If it works, he keeps his job. If it doesn't, he and the entire staff lose their jobs.
That's just speculation on my part. Like I said, I do expect staff changes, but I get the sinking feeling Nix won't be part of the changes, and that's the biggest problem. The way I see it, Boone is giving Nutt the rope. He can either decide to use it to pull himself out of the hole or hang himself.
Outside of the Orgeron era, we haven't had back to back losing seasons since 1993 and 1994, and 94 was the Joe Lee Dunn interim year created by our probation. We haven't lost 3 years in a row to MSU since pre-WWII, and Nutt was the first coach to lose 2 in a row to MSU since 76 and 77, wins that were later forfeited by MSU, so the way I see it he has to have a winning season in 2011 AND win the Egg Bowl. If he were to go 9-3 or 8-4 with an Egg Bowl loss, he'd probably survive for 2012, but 6-6 or 7-5 with an Egg Bowl loss and I think he's gone. An Egg Bowl win and 5-7, and I think he's gone. I don't think he will have the freedom to buy himself 2012.
