So I've been on here a while and don't recall anyone mentioning the Gene

Unfortnately, pornfro was my neighbor in Starkville at Walden Place.

He's an MSU grad - accounting degree. Was an accountant for the railroad and got fired for spending too much time on Gene's Page. SOB pulls in six figures now.

Large subscriber base, Scout has bought the rights and probably pays him (from what I've heard about other Scout site owners with similar subscriber bases) a few hundred grand per. Now on to the quotes:

"No, he is from MS but moved over to the Bayou state a few years back."

"He actually went to Southern Miss but has been a huge MSU fan his whole life."

and this was back in 2004 that he had about 1500 paying members at $9.95/month. That's $179,100. He doesn't have that many expenses associated with the website. My best guess is the site cost him $20,000/year max.

Back in 02-03 he was in the process of moving from Caledonia to Starkville.

No, I don't know this b/c we are friends, but b/c I was working as a student for media relations at the time. By the way, I've got his cell number if anyone wants to prank call him</p>

Does he still have a customer base that large? Since 2004, we suffered the Croom Error, Polk having four turrible years out of five and some hit and miss basketball. Also, there are more MSU websites, which cuts his market share.

in a combination of the economy, BDJ and the Six Pack, but I bet you he is still around 1200 or so. 90 percent of the paying members simply read and don't post.

On another note, the Alabama Scout site has over 8000 paying members. Let those numbers sink in. The guy that runs it has a staff of 8 and has office space right off campus, most people run it out of their homes.

In any business there is a huge advantage in being first to market. He was here first. He's got that going for him.

Hey Gene - rest on your laurels and you will rest on the street.

with Scout, with Scout getting a bigger cut. I think he pays Scout:

(1) So much a paying member ($0.50 x 1200 = $600/mo. - $7200 a year)
(2) So much a non premium message board member ($0.15 x 8000 = $1200/mo. - $14,400 a year)
(3) So much per GB of traffic over a set amount (no idea, have never seen this)

Rosebowl does live in Baton Rouge. Now whether or not he went to State, USM or none of the above, I have no idea.

in my mind that his subscription base is close to 2000. I know Bo Bounds has said on the radio that the Ole Miss scout site is like the second or third largest in the network.

I will give him credit because he started his site from nothing and it grew and grew.

I know he used to do some recruiting stuff for USM(he may still since he's like Scout's main recruiting guy in MS).

Geno is die-hard MSU and making a <17>'n killing off dumbasses....as is Chuck. Like was mentioned earlier, Gene made his out of nothing, while Chuck's been making a living off UM for close to 30 years.

The Spirit was around looooong before the internet was.....I remember it being in the in the over-sizes magazine form much like the old Dawg's Bitr was 20 ears ago.

Gene is barely scraping by but it's not the case.

When you take in the Scout affiliation (they get paid for the articles they write) the subscriber revenue the magazine (even as horrible as the writing is) and the ad revenue I wouldn't be surprised if Gene is pulling down mid-300k. You can actually make a lot of money off these sites because expenses are ridiculously low.

Delta St.

Like Gene, I'm not inclined to rag on either b/c they both clearly make more money than I do. Yancy did go to Ole Miss. From someone who was there at the same time as him, he's pretty much the same guyas now. Jeff Roberson, a class guy if there ever was one, graduated from UM as well...which at least in my mind helps offset Yancy on the Spirit roster.

Well, you'd think he could afford more than the black Faded Glory jeans/jorts that he wears with his assortment of MSU sweatshirts.
