Also clarified his statements to his hearing about Russia, said the question was very specific about contacts surrounding the 2016 Trump campaign. He said he gave a very specific answer, No, he did not have any contact with Russians concerning the campaign. Made two contacts, one more social during a dinner he attended and one under Senate responsibility that included his staffers. No Trump campaign issues discussed at either meeting.

Judicial ethics advisers said he should recuse himself, so he is going by the statement he made during his hearing and doing that.

Of course he said that. No different than Bill claiming a BJ is not "sexual relations". He can't lie his way out of this statement though....

At his Jan. 10 Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked by Democratic Senator Al Franken what he would do if he learned of any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of the 2016 campaign, the Post reported.

"I’m not aware of any of those activities," Sessions responded, according to the Post. He added: "I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians."

None of that conflicts with meeting the ambassador with staff in attendance, and only one such meeting with many countries that he had had

Let's get it right:
Franken: "CNN just published a story alleging that the intelligence community provided documents to the president-elect last week that included information that quote, ‘Russian operatives claimed to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump.’ These documents also allegedly say quote, ‘There was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump's surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government.’

"Now, again, I'm telling you this as it's coming out, so you know. But if it's true, it's obviously extremely serious and if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?"

Sessions: "Senator Franken, I'm not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn't have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I'm unable to comment on it."

And then:

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., asked: "Several of the President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?"

Sessions responded, in total: "No."

Only a fool answers a question like this incorrectly or with more information than necessary, the question is very specific to the 2016 election. Not in his capacity as a Senator. It is a YES or NO question.

What activities......ones related to the election? Was Sessions considered part of the Trump campaign in regard the the meeting or was it part of his Senatorial activity?

Sessions was not part of the campaign. His "communication" was as senator. There is no conflict.

If you say so guys. You should send Trump a tweet telling him Sessions doesn't have to recuse himself. "It's all lie, false news" as the Russians are saying.[thumbsup]

I'll go further than calling it a lie. It's Democrats attempting to undermine the current administration. They should call for a full immediate investigation of all leaks and prosecute to the full list extent of the law.

And I don't care if it does take down former presidents or sitting senators.

You do realize he stood on stage at the podium, addressed the crowd and made an endorsement of little hands donnie at the GOP convention? You do realize he spoke at numerous little hands donnie rallies?

Irrelevant. His day job is not working for the campaign. It's pretty straightforward.

Was he a Senator at the time or had he resigned AND on the Trump campaign payroll?

Totally unnecessary step on their part. Obama administration set the bar low with Lynch not recusing herself after meeting Bill
It's a harmless move and adds some transparancy. Sessions reasoning was correct, he was part of Biff's campaign, he shouldn't be part of its investigation.

I wouldn't even have done that because the Pelosi's of the world will now be calling for him to step down. It won't stop.

So you want the former POTUS investigated for investigating covert Russian activity in the U.S.? I'm not sure whether to laugh or turn you in for being a lunatic.

You people argue over the silliest things...he recused himself. That's that.
That was the correct thing to do. It will make no difference....in the end they will not do anything to him except find him guilty of a little misinterpretation fib. If the record shows he colluded with the Russians it would result in a different outcome....but it won't. Other people were present at the meetings....lets see what they have to say.

"I promised that I would do this, if a specific matter arose where I believed that my impartiality might reasonably be questioned I would consult with the department's ethics officials regarding the most appropriate way to proceed."

Justice Department Ethics officials said it would be best if he would recuse himself, kept his word. I admire him for keeping his word.

No issue with investigating while he was sitting. To the extent of trying to undermine the duly elected POTUS, administration, and US Gov't as a civilian in an effort that will harm the nation? Sure. He is a civilian now, and he doesn't have executive privilege anymore. Do you really want the Trump administration to start pulling skeletons out of the Obama closet in response?

Yes. If there are laws broken, investigate, make findings and take the appropriate actions so morons like yourself will quit making up conspiracies out of thin air.

As the Russians would say "It's all lie. false news".

"I did not have communications with the Russians" "It's all lie" "It's fake news" "It's all Obama's fault" "It's the Generals' fault" "I have the best Generals" "I know more than the Generals" "Obama planned this not me" "My raid was a complete success" "The media is the enemy"

The swamp is overflowing with the same lies and blame from Russia to the White House. Yep. "Moron conspiracies"[thumbsup]

Trump is the champion negotiator. In exchange for OK on appointing a independent council in this regard, the Dems should be reminded that there were a few loose ends under Obama Admin. To wit: guns with Mexico under Holder authorization; Lois Learner and selectively determining exemption fundraisers while visiting WH hundreds of times; Benghazi and the whole damned administration involvement. Those events should be investigated by independent investigation.

I scratch my head when I see compliance with Dems for their requests at the first suggestion that it would be the proper thing to do. Dems and media blocked every request for independent investigation when Dems are involved. We have ethics committee that is supposed to act on these allegations, but they become very protective and political when a Dem has *** in grinder. Last time that committee acted independently, Nancy Johnson, republican crossed over to bust Newt's ***. Dems have never broken ranks thru Clinton and Obama terms. Several Repubs are crying for investigation. Collins and my own SC Senator are obviously ready to break ranks with Republicans.

Of course recusal is the proper way to go when AG is involved, but it should be for each political party equally. Dems don't play fair.

Smart and he should. Remove all doubt. Let the bi-partisan panel investigate all of the evidence, issue their findings, and if he's clean along with the Trump campaign people they have nothing to fear from at least getting to the bottom of just what if anything the Russians were up to?

Maybe after all of the facts come out we can put this silly story about them influencing the outcome of the election to rest once and for all?

I think this is a smart move. No way should he resign or be charged with "criminal intent" as some on the Left are demanding.

You do realize he was not the only US Government official having regular conversations with Russian diplomats?

So explain to us countryroads89, just how did the Russians manage that Uranium deal with Hillary?
