I am not on the fire Dan crowd just yet. I am able to see we are using a lot of freshmen and player with no experience on defense that are going to make big mistakes against good and decent teams. I see that our tackles on offense have not fleshed out quite like we expected them to. Neither QB has taken the spot and made it clear they should be the starter. The team has a lot of growing to do and growing pains hurt like hell.
The problem I have is that we have yet to play an entire game without losing focus and intensity. When the interception was ruled pass interference, the air went out of our team and it never came back. A big part of that is on the coaching staff for sure, but you have to have someone step up from the players and LEAD the rest of the team back into things. This team has no clear cut leader on defense. Someone to get in the other player's faces and push them. Someone that will raise their own intensity and lead the rest of the guys to come along.
I would yell about having a leader on offense but the play calling and lack of adaptability in schemes in the second half of our games keeps any player from taking the lead. I think either Dak or Russell would be that leader if we didn't shoot our entire wad in the first half of the game.
Lastly, our penalties are stupid as ****. This is not the first game anymore to be making the stupid penalties we are making in games right now that kill our drives and keep theirs going.
Mullen was constantly improving our team up until the end of last year and this year. I think that is what is starting the fire Mullen crowd up, it is easy to see the lack of development that was not there until last year. If we actually improve by season's end, we will have a killer team next year with a lot of depth. If we don't, the depth won't matter and we will be shopping for a coach by season's end.
