...don't forget we had our third-level athletes (our best play basketball and football, followed by baseball) going up against the world's best. While it's, as George Patton says, a hateful thing to lose, just remember that the best teams come from places where the Free Market is frowned upon and in many cases their fans smell like pig ****.

Soccer rules haven't changed since they were codified in the 1920's. Whereas Freedom Football and basketball are always innovating and changing rules to increase the interestto the fans and players (even baseball introduced the DH), soccer hasn't changed one iota. Imagine watching a basketball game today with a jump ball after every basket, or playing football with a rounded bladder and two-platoon players wearing leather helmets.

The reason the rest of the world isn't interested in American football, is because they're too unsophisticated to understand the nuances and intricacies that go into that sport. Being the product of dictatorships and Socialism, they prefer simplistic sports, where all you need a four rocks and a ball.

Maybe with all the illegal aliens coming into our country who're going to become citizens real soon, perhaps Soccer will truly catch on.

It will probably be kids in Ghana that end up wearing all the "USA 2010 WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS" T-Shirts Adidas had printed up.

Germany and England are both backward, third-world, impoverished nations with filth in the street.

As soccer gains popularity in the US (which it is), more and more of the top athletes will choose it over football and basketball. And we will continue to get better in the world rankings. Soccer will never surpass football or basketball in popularity, but it doesn't have to for us to be great at it. Heck, look at hockey - it's probably 4th or 5th in popularity in the US, and we played sudden-death OT for the Gold medal against Canada, where hockey is a clear #1 sport.

1. The top athletes will never choose it over football or basketball. You are required to go overseas to earn money therefore it just won't happen.
2. I am throwing a shot in the dark but if i had to guess, hockey is played by maybe 30-40 countries. Soccer is played by every country.

I love soccer and I do think in the next 5-6 world cups, we will make the final group of 4.

we suck at *sport*, so we actually don't care about it and will bash it to no end until it looks like we have a shot at winning something again in *sport*.

our REAL focus is football.

It will never pass football and basketball here but it doesn't have to. The gain in popularity in the US will lead to more interest and more participation. Also count in the fact that the demographic makeup of our country is becoming more diversified and there is more of an interest in soccer within those demographics. It will lead to more quality and quantities of players here. I agree that the US will make the final group of 4 within 3 or 4 WC's.

is a catchy little saying from back in the day. And I own guns, so maybe I belong to a right wing militia and didn't even know it. Just sayin'

....both of whom embraced the Welfare State after World War II. They did this because the US was providing the bulk of their national defense against the Russians. So, yes, they're socialist nations. But no matter, because America is defining deviancy down at a breakneck pace all the citizens will only be able to handle simple sports like Soccer.

as one of the top four teams in the World Baseball Classic, and that was without some of our best players- namely pitchers- on the team and Davey Johnson managing, and then Barry Larkin doing the absolute worst job at managing a baseball game that I have ever seen at any level.

Judging from some of the young players coming up in MLB- Jason Heyward, Stephen Strasburg, Tim Lincecum, Mike Stanton, Austin Jackson- are all Americans, we should get better IF the owners get their heads out of their *** and let the best pitchers play. Cuba's league is declining, the Dominican seems to be on the decline as far as talent. Japan is still very strong as well as Korea, and Mexico is putting more and more players in the Big Leagues than they have in the past decade. I also think Canada of all people- is a team on the rise.

I think we would have won the WBC with a better manager- I would have picked Joe Torre if I had my drouthers, and he may get the nod if he's out of the game in a couple of years. If Joe is still managing, I would go with Bobby Cox.

I would alter the training to begin in December- the Japanese have their team selected by Nov. Because of the pitch counts, I would use what I call a tandem rotation- Two starters assigned to one start. In other words- say Strasburg throws the first three innings, followed by CC Sabathia for three. THEN go to the bullpen in the seventh. I'd also have USA baseball pay Albert Pujols 10 million dollars to play for team USA instead of the Domonican team.

If Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols would have been on the pitch in South Africa they would have gotten embarrassed in terms or athleticism by our other "third rate athletes" we have playing for us. In fact Prince Fielder's fat *** may have had a heart attack. In terms of raw athletic ability, baseball doesn't hold a candle to soccer.

Coach is actually cooler than you.

Damn i cant remember the last time i read something from you that made sense. Not even that i agreed with, just that made sense.

Mutt, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I
have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were
you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award
you no points, and may Allah have mercy on your soul.

if beating other countries in baseball was the top priority of managers, players, fans, sponsors, etc., i'm pretty sure we'd be first or second every year

Can Landon Donovan or Tim Howard hit a MLB fastball or curveball? Could they hold up over a 162 game season? Micheal Jordan couldn't, and I daresay he was a better pure athlete than 99% of the players in MLB, if not 100% when he was playing around in AA. On the other hand, Bo Jackson did just fine, and Deion Sanders was essentially a role player. Brian Jordan did OK, but he really became a solid MLB player only after giving up the NFL.

I'm not saying that our soccer players are bad athletes, but I don't think that there is any debate that we spread our talent around in other sports whereas in other countries, such as Brazil, pretty much all of their top athletes play soccer.

I also imagine that baseball and soccer value different skills over others. For example, hand eye coordination, which Albert Pujols is exceptional at, is probably valued more in baseball. Speed is probably valued more in soccer. I think the key as an athlete is to figure out where your skills fit the best at.
