So Tyler Russell took the first string snaps today in practice

Interestingly it has not been brought up here. Split time with Relf and took the majority of the first team snaps. Mullen said it was to "mix it up." That seems to be headway to me. Guess 150 yards passing is better than a 60 yard run by a QB in Mullen's eyes. Think some should be giving TR more of a chance, Dan is

He will play this year so he needs snaps with the #1 unit. Now if Russell gets most of the snaps the balance of spring practice, then we have something to talk about.

although both heads should be above five feet this year. Hell, UF is even talking about using a 2 qb system and they have what looks to be a pretty good newcomer in Brantley.

This has been the plan all along. TR had to get to the point that he was ready to do it. He needs alot of work vs the 1st D so he can get used to SEC speed. Only way he is going to get better

as Mullen said- we'll see on April 17th

Myer and Mullen are cut from the same cloth and unless either have THAT GUY that can run very effective and throw they will play two qbs.

This has been the plan all along.

That sure didn't sound like the plan last fall when you repeatedly made it sound like Russell sucked, would never fit into Mullen's system and might as well transfer.

Now, before you begin... we know your m.o. This is the part where you call me a dumbass or something similar and whip out the disclaimers and deflections. But you said it.

you are smart enough to realize Newton going to Auburn has forced us into a different direction

As for the "plan all along"- that refers to this Spring's plan with the 2 QB's that we have. I've not said one time since Newton went to Auburn that Russell and Relf weren't going to both play this Fall- so don't even try and act like I did.

I still maintain Relf will play more than Russell

I missed the part where the bad-mouthing of Tyler Russell was conditional on us signing Newton. My bad.

was simply stating things I had heard from various football people.

I'm still willing to bet Russell doesn't wow us any this season with his running skills.

TR ran the spread in high school, he watched it for a year in the SEC, and he has praciticed it for over ayear at MSU. If you can remember he enrolled in the summer of 09. I think it was posted during last year at the end of the season Mullen was ready to burn the red shirt and put him in. I will say it is a 60/40 chance that he will start this fall.</p>

..listening to you on here last fall I would have assumed Tyler Russell is a bum.

Now? He'll play.... just not as much as Relf. The unflattering things you posted about him weren't really your thoughts, but were told to you by others and the only hole you're willing to poke in his game at this point is how fast he can run.

Damn, dude....

/I'm out.

Of course, I heard it all from Coach34 so I took it with a huge grain of salt.

95% of this Board- including you- were saying it was a foregone conclusion that Russell was going to be our starting QB this season should we not get Newton. And I said I wouldnt count on that being the case- he's not as great as many of you hope he is...he is not a very good runner from what I heard and I don't know how much we are willing to change the offense for him

And here we are in Spring practice- and Russell has just worked with the 1st team for the first time halfway thru Spring...

So before spouting off your mouth, you might want to actually analyze why you are getting on my ***

Glad to see the general consensus is changing. He can run better that yall give him credit for.

the "general concensus" on this board was that starting this Spring, Russell would be the starting QB. Relf couldnt beat him out if he had to.

Hell, there were some here wanting to burn Russell's RS halfway thru the season last Fall...not to mention all the people that thought he would be the starting QB by the 3rd or 4th game LAST season....

No, there was only one person around here mentioning that Russell just might not be everything people say he is...wonder who that was...

of Lee playing as well as he could and being a heady player- in practice- that allowed him to play fairly well the first half of the season...other than some critical turnovers, he didnt play that bad...but once his confidence started to go, that was it. He was awful the last few games

Relf, it appears, just needed some coaching and somebody to kick him in the *** to get straight. The guy has been nothing but a good player for us since coming off his suspension. I have to admit to being wrong about him, altho he is still no Rhodes scholar. He is doing what we need in this offense on the ground and hopefully he will hit the port-o-lets less often and become a competent passing threat.

I think he is going to get at least 2/3 of the snaps at QB, especially early in the season. But there is no doubt both will play. And Russell needs to play some for the experience if nothing else. I'm curious to see how he does vs the 1st D in the next scrimmage.

I don't see why we wouldn't be more of a passing team unless we just can't get any WR's or something like that. I just don't think Dan likes to run so much that he would put ourselves in a bad position and give us less of a chance to win. That sounds a little bit like, well, Croom.

And I don't think that we will totally abandon the run or option with Russell, but if he can throw the ball well, we would be foolish to not take advantage of it.

hardheaded to the point of being anything close to Crooms. I think he will adjust as needed. But having Relf 2 more seasons, plus the push to bring in more dual-threat QB's will hopefully keep us from having to become more pass-happy

and what we really needed to do was round up a dual-threat QB and play to our strengths. Now we have a very talented passing QB and everybody wants to ditch the dual-threat.

Not saying it's right or wrong, just funny.

I think the answer is to have a coach that can adjust the offense to the players strengths. We may very well have one that will do just that.

I never understood why you seemed to have a personal vendetta against the kid. Im to lazy to look back and link but I believe you thought he couldn't run the ball and would not fit in the offense because of it. I on the other hand am happy to have a QB that can pass and a RB that can run. Guess im just a traditionalist

that relf would be making a switch to another position as maybe a tightend. So that would leave TR as backup, but clearly TR hasn't edged out Relf. Whom I thought all along should have seen more minutes. But, he probably would have knowing what we do now. That the suspension wasn't for the first time popping positive.

I dont have a following in football- we have many more intelligent posters on this site for football than we do basketball...I have a much larger following in basketball now because many see that I have been right about Stansbury for quite awhile and they are sick of his incompetence too

As to Russell- saying a guy that will struggle to run the ball may have trouble in our offense is in no way a "vendetta"....The fact that Relf is in the lead for our QB position should tell you that I'm right and Russell is struggling to find his way into our offense.

I dont care who plays QB- I just want to win. But I do know alot about the Spread offense- particularly the running aspect of it...and Relf fits that alot better than Russell does...we shall see how it turns out
