when did that happen? Id rather have him or Brunetti but offering Mason, could that mean bad news on the Newton front?

...since I've been under the impression that we wouldn't offer Mason (or any other HS QB) unless Newton said he wasn't coming. Anyone have a confirmation on when Mason received this offer? If it was recently, then I have a bad feeling about Newton...

I think we plan to take a high school QB whether Newton signs with us or not. We've been after Newton and Brunetti hard and would take commitments from both right now. This staff understands the importance of signing a QB in every class.

We reportedly offered during an in-home last week.

Is he on scholarship now or walk-on status? Will he be on scholarship next year? I was thinking I remembered something about his MLB team paying for his education or something.

that it is only ok to sign one quarterback per year?

I know that is very odd to our fans but it IS ok to sign more than one decent qb per recruiting class.

We're not recruiting Newton to fill this year's QB signee. We're recruiting him to fill that slot from 3 years ago. We still need to sign a HS QB this year, just like we do every year. Ideally, we need to have 5 QBs on the roster every year, a SR, a JR, a SO, a redshirt FR and a true FR. If we sign Newton plus a HS QB, we'll be right at 5 QBs on the roster, 2 JRs, 2 redshirt FR and a true FR.

The way I understand it, and I could be wrong, is the Mets agreed to pay Stegall's college tuition if he flamed out in the minors. That's it--no books, room, board or meals. As a result, he is either on scholarship now or will be put on one for next year.

I didn't say that I approved of not taking a high-school QB if we sign Newton, only that I was under the impression that we were only taking 1 QB. Personally, I think we need to take a HS QB every year. While I'm confident in our coaches to make the Russell/Relf combination work, I still want too see out depth chart filled with quality players competing for the starting role.

I know many people are optimistic about next year, even if we don't sign Newton, but I still have significant doubts about Relf's ability to do anything other than run. If you remember when he said that TD pass to Bumphis on 4th down was intended for Wilder, go back and watch the video. Had Bumphis not been there, that would have been a easy pick for OM. I've been hearing good things about Russell's practice performance towards the end of the season, but I'd rather not put all my eggs in one basket. I want Newton, but I'd also like to get a quality high-school QB to start prepping incase we have any major issues with the Russell/Relf combo.

kept his mouth shut on that one if he was truly throwing to Wilder. Going back and looking at the replay, Bumphis had to reach up to catch the ball himself and Wilder was a good 5 yards in front of him. If he was throwing to Wilder then the pass was one of the worst I've seen all year and was severely overthrown.
