So, what 'generic' jersey should State choose?

This would be a great way to honor players like Nick Bell and/or Keffer McGee; a visible way to keep them in our memories. I would definitely like to have one of those. Maybe part of the price given to scholarships in their memory.

Any other ideas? What says the pack?

From ... http://espn.go.com/college-football...ges-stop-selling-jerseys-numbers-star-players

Worried about the ramifications of selling the numbers tied to student-athletes, several schools have decided not to sell football jerseys with star players' digits on them this upcoming season, sources tell ESPN.

Three schools -- Texas A&M, Arizona and Northwestern -- will offer more generic jerseys this season.

The Aggies sold thousands of No. 2 jerseys over the past two years thanks to Johnny Manziel, who wore the number, but sources say the only jersey available at retail this year will be the No. 12 -- as in the "12th Man," a jersey the school has sold for years, alongside other numbers.

Northwestern will limit sales to No. 51, which was used by current head coach Pat Fitzgerald during his heralded playing career. Arizona, meanwhile, will only offer No. 14, as in 2014.

"We've been thinking about doing this for a while," said Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne, who wouldn't elaborate any further.
Officials with Northwestern and Texas A&M declined to comment, but college sports insiders have expected a move like this designed to lessen the legal exposure of the schools and change the public perception of taking advantage of college athletes, as they fight harder for their commercial rights.

Why does no one ever mention Rodney Stowers in these threads?

He was a Bulldog that passed away as well. He deserves every bit the remembering as Keffer and Nick but is never mentioned. Why is that? I can't figure that out. And I'm not bashing you. This happens every thread that mentions players passing too early.

Whichever one is chosen, the marketing dept will demand a # hash tag be put in front of it..........

Instead of a number, they'd sell a jersey with a big outline of Mississippi on with a star where Starkville is and instead of "Mississippi State" I would say "This is OUR State!" with a hashtag of #HailState.

Someone from our athletic department just read this and has already contacted Adidas.

I didn't remember about Rodney Stowers. Do you think it's maybe because his death would have been avoided if he hadn't played college football so people sort of unconsciously screen his story out? It's a whole lot more emotionally complicated to get fired up about MSU football while recognizing a guy who died because he played MSU football. And it would be pretty scary for the players to be reminded of the devastating freak consequences that the game can have.

But I agree with you that he should be honored and remembered.

ETA: or it may have more to do with the fact that malpractice suits were filed after his death. I'm not sure who the original defendants were, but if State was among them, it might also make it complicated to know how to honor Stowers without admitting fault. This goes over a lot of legal stuff after the medical malpractice suit, but could get someone who was really interested started on looking stuff up: http://kingfish1935.blogspot.com/2013/01/brunini-kicked-off-germany-case.html
