So, what happens when the cowbells start against Auburn?

We all know it's going to happen. The question is whether or not our administartion will do anything about it during the game like make an announcement over the sound system. I can already hear the whining if we beat them and they blame cowbells. And of course during the game you know ESPN is going to be talking about the new rule every five seconds, I can already hear thisgem coming fromthe broadcaster on a third down- "UH OH that sounds alot like cowbells!!!!!"

but, at some point, you ring at the wrong time, (it's hard to hide)... security will be instructed to TAKE your bell!

Guys, we only have One shot atthis, the SEC is serious about eliminating them.

Ring e'm wrong and they are gone!

And we are 17ed and fined!

When it's 3rd down and you're not allowed to ring your cowbell for noise, are people actually going to yell? I'll believe it when I see it.

...that there enough people to do the same, creating a noticeable difference between the bonedaddys and the people who want to keep the cowbell around and allow their children to experience the cowbell. And I hope security takes em up if people don't comply.

I sit just to the left of the pressbox area in thechairback seats and I am surrounded by older people, and I can tell you there will be no yelling from them. Last year, whenever I would go to ringing my bell, they would seriously give me a look like "why don't you sit down and shut the 17 up". I have a hard time seeing those same people cheering.

It just takes some encouragement to get them riled up.I think the school is doing an amazing job so far on educating the fan base on how to solve our dilemma. Sure there will be times the **** hits the fan with the cowbells but a few announcements over the PA and continuous campaign to raise everyone's awareness of when to ring the bell should be enough to tame the majority. The student section will definitely have to be the leader and the ones under the most scrutiny throughout the season. Auburn will be a testament on how far we have come since the rule came into play.

There will be some dubmasses that will have no clue that there has even been a new rule applied. There are always ***-clowns in every situation. Hopefully, the "***-clowns" will get it out of their system during the Memphis game. There will be enough people in the stadium to let them know when they mess up during the Memphis game.

With that said, I can see them banning our cowbells after this year whether we obey the rule or not. The SEC will find a reason to screw us over. Sort of like the ***-clowns we elected to rule our country.

I am one of those old people in the chair backs that will yell. I don't yell as hard or often as I did as a freshman in 1961. I also won't use the cowbell as a weapon of mass destruction against Memphis when the beat us at Starkville. In September 1970 several of us in Sunflower County made a giant cowbell that the cheerleaders used for a period of time.
I HOPE A BUNCH OF DUMBO'S DON'T CAUSE MSU TO LOSE THIS TRADITION.

IF WE CAN'T YELL WITH "HOTTY & TODDY" (the coming Ole Miss jokers) we don't deserve to maintain our tradition.

We need to do everything we can to preserve this tradition that sets us apart from the rest! There will be enough non conference games to "act out".

RING YOUR BELL...PRESERVE THE TRADITION!

I thought this was an Ole Miss only phenomenon. So people all over Mississippi refuse to cheer/yell/make noise at sporting events?

I don't know but I imagine that the MSU powers that be will produce a video that will be shown on the jumbotron before each game narrated by some notable Bulldawg such as Mullen or Dixon or Strickland or Keenum or somebody explaining the rules.

Then, during the game, there will be some visual cue displayed on either the main screen of the jumbotron or one of the peripheral screens with either a symbol of a ringing cowbell or a cowbell with the "no ringing" circle with a line through it in front of the cowbell symbol. These would help to educate fans about the appropriate and allowed times to "ring responsibly."

There will always be those who disregard responsibility but, hopefully, they will be few and eventually succumb to peer pressure of those around them.

Listen, I don't like restricted ringing any more than anyone else but, like it or not, this is the hand we've been dealt and we really have no choice but to make the best of it. In years past I have rung loud and long (and, yes, I sit in the chairbacks) so I don't like not being able to ring whenever I want, especially when the opposing team is on 3rd down, but I'd rather be able to ring some of the time that none of the time.

In all seriousness, except for maybe after scores, why bring a cowbell if you can't ring it on 3rd and long or any time the defense is on the field?

Does anyone bring a cowbell to the game for tradition sakes? I always assume people bring em and ring em to help their team, not just to bring em.

before and after and during. I don't know the consequences but that's how it will go down.

If you don't know the consequences, then look here http://www.respectthebell.com. The ADs will meet again on August 18th in Destin, at this meeting, they will set fines for different things for the season. If the SEC rep who is at the game thinks we are in clear violation of this policy, then we will get hit with a fine. This fine will increase each game that it is given to us and will be in amounts over $100,000. We consistantly complain about how we wish we had more money in our budget, and how its hard to compete in the SEC with our budget. So, how do you think having fines like this will affect our budget? It takes us self disciplining ourselves and those around us to make this work.

However, I'm also going to go ahead and acknowledge how awkward it's going to be when, at that first big 4th and goal situation, we don't hear cowbells and instead hear the faint whisper of a yell mustered out by the blue hairs and the fat people that can only manage to stand up when it's time to take a piss. Nothing against old and/or fat people - they just aren't as loud as cowbells.

I just don't anticipate the intimidation factor of our crowd being very high (even at an energetic 55k) when we have been so reliant on an artificial noisemaker to do the work for us for so many decades. Once that perceived silence happens, it's going to be weird and it's going to make most people uncomfortable simply because it's different.

I'm going to refrain for as long as I can and make what noise I can by yelling, stomping, etc. But, I'm going ahead and acknowledging that this is likely going to fail after people realize how quiet it gets in DWS without using a cowbell. That's not to say we can't produce an intimidating environment at key times without the use of an artificial noisemaker. It certainly can be done. I just don't think it's very likely since there's a quick/easy/lazy method to avoid that awkward silence with that piece of metal resting by your side.

Of course, I hope I'm wrong. I'm sure we'll give it our best shot. I guess that's all we can do at this point.
