So What's the Bad Blood Between Will and Palmero about?

Well I know he did in an interview. Essentially said Palmiero should have retired and not tried to extend his career by taking roids, then laughed that he got busted.

But I do remember when the Rangers signed Will Clark back in 1993 to be their first baseman, it really pissed Palmeiro off for some reason. I had heard that he didn't like "being replaced" by Clark. Palmeiro ended up with the Orioles. Then later on, Clark replaced him again, and Palmeiro went back to the Rangers.

It's sad to me, because the thought of Clark and Palmeiro playing on the same team in MLB was kind of cool. Would have caused some poor manager some headaches, though.

Whatever started it, it was probably over something petty and stupid.

when they were at State. Clark seems to be a pretty cool guy when you see him in interviews and such, but I think it was pretty well known that he could be an abrasive personality, especially when he was younger. I'm still a fan though.

And Palmeiro seems to be pretty sensitive. (I DID NOT USE STEROIDS! THIS MAN IS A LIAR!)

What can you say about Clark? He's a coonass.

Sensitive person + coonass = hurt feelings.

I've met Clark too- he was pretty nice to me. But I was also 9 when I met him.

I don't think they ever really liked each other from the beginning. Their personalities just clashed. But the feud really started when Clark made the Olympic team while Palmeiro wasn't eligible (he wasn't a US citizen). That's when it changed from being Palmeiro and Clark to being Clark and Palmeiro. And Todd is right, Palmeiro is a sensitive guy and he took it personal. As for Clark, saying he "could be an abrasive personality" is a huge understatement. He was a first class ******* and possibly the most arrogant athlete to ever set foot on MSU's campus. I like them both, but they've both got some character flaws / issues (like a lot of people do).

I remember when they brought all of them back to Dudy Noble for the alumni baseball game. Palmeiro was all class and super nice. I met him again a few years back when he was introduced at half time of a game. He was nice, humble and chill. Clark...........at the alumni game when all of us kids were trying to get his autograph he was an impatient dick. He totally ignored and blew of a bunch of kids who were calling his name while he was in the dugout. Having kids now and seeing how impressed they are with certain older people and how innocent they are about it..................it is a shame how he acted. He is a class A dick. I remember it to this day and I was very very young. It made an impression on me how NOT to act to children. 17 him.
Palmeiro has always seemed like the better and nicer guy. Plus, who's name is on the building for giving money for the Palmeiro center.

but I also have some vague memories of him being a major jerk at alumni games concerning autographs for kids and such.

He is still probably my favorite MSU player to ever watch play in the pro's but he was a major **********.

My brother was about 8-9 years old and was wearing a cheesy Will Clark Tshirt when we saw him sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Houston. Dad, told me to walk over there with my brother and help my brother get his autograph. He was sitting alone, doing nothing and appeared to be waiting on someone to get his room for him. My brother said, "Mr. Clark, you are my favorite baseball player, can I have your autograph?" He looked at the 8 year old boy and said,"kid, I don't have time for stuff like this."

My brother was crushed, his idol had just basically **** on him. We sat there for another 20 minutes and watched him do absolutely nothing but look around the lobby. At this point my father walked over to him and had a few choice words for him and we left.

The guy was super talented but one of the biggest ******** I have ever encountered.

Class A dick. No excuse for that. If an adult had walked over to bother him I could understand but a child........come on. I have met many people more famous than him and 99% of them never acted like that. I remember meeting Kenny Stabler when I was a kid and he was as cool and nice as he could be.

That's because he probably had a pretty good buzz going. I kid. I think Stabler's a great guy and would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

I played in a Celebrity golf tourney back in the late 90's in Mobile, and Stabler was our celebrity golfer. That was honestly one of the best times I have ever had on a golf course. Dude was drunk but the 5th hole(as were all of us), and he was a smartass every time someone hit a ****** shot(which was quite often). We shot a robust 6 under to finish 12 back, and didn't care.

After the round, he was have a get together at his house, and invited us all over. When we got there, he introduced us to all of the other celebrities in the tourney(Namath, Pat Sullivan, Pat Dye, Cleon Jones, etc). He treated us like everyone else at the party, and checked in regularly to make sure we were having a good time. I ran in to him about three months later on Dauphin Street in Mobile, and he remembered me like he had met me that morning.

Really great guy.

That is an understatement. I've been around The Snake some, he is as laid back as they come. And a great storyteller.

The same thing happened to me with Clark at an alumni game. I was around 7 or 8 years old and hadn't gotten to the game early enough to try and get autographs before the game. I walked down to the fence shortly after the game started when Clark's team was batting and simply asked him if he could give me his autograph. He looked up at me and said kid I have a game to worry about like it was the world series or something. The alumni game is for the fans not for him and it doesn't matter who wins but this guy didn't even have time for kids during it. He then became one of my least favorite pro baseball players from State.

I started at MSU the same year they did (1982) and they always seemed not to get along but the issue with the Olympic team really seemed to seal the deal in regards to their relationship. I recall after the Olympics that Starkville (could have been MSU, I can't recall) had a parade for Clark and really played it up. I am sure that stuck in Palmerio's craw as well.

I will chime in and say I've met Palmeiro twice and he was super classy both times. Will, the one time I met him, was "too busy" to give an autograph to a 13 year old.

The stories of the complete blow off reminded me of how Carlton Fisk did the same to me when I was 8 or 9. Made me want to stop catching at that point. Not really sure how I would react if I met him now but it might not be pretty.

Had a business class w/Raffy and 3b Scott. Both always came off to me as quiet, and respectful to everyone (except the ******* econ. prof).
One day we were waiting for the (*******) prof to stagger in, some chick told Raffy and John that the guys on the team were cute esp Clark. Think Raffy just rolled his eyes and shook his head.

this is correct it started in college. but the Rangers thing wasn't the icing on the cake it was the damn atomic bomb. Palmerio went pubic and basically said to the world how Clark stabbed him the back and was a terrible teammate, etc. Well if you guys remember the Rangers offered Raffy $25M/5 years he said no three times wanting more money. So the Rangers moved on and offered Clark the same deal he took it. Yes Will probably should have called Raffy and told him he was taking the deal, but Raffy had no business going public with those statements and talking the smack he did. Then years later Will hit him with the roid smack.

Palmeiro should have been OK with it simply because he wasn't eligible to be on the team. It's not like he was passed over.

Palmeiro may be nice to people, but he sounds kind of petty to me.

are making me wonder why he was nice to me. Maybe he just thought my Mom was hot. Or maybe he thought I was an ******* too.

as it was about being passed over for top dog position on our baseball team. Up until the Olympics, Palmeiro was the unquestioned best player on the team. But after the Olympics, Clark got the spotlight and Palmeiro was pushed aside a little bit. Your right about Palmeiro. He is a nice guy, but he can also be a bit petty, especially when his feeling have been hurt. As for Clark being nice to you, trust me on this, you just caught him on the right day at the right time.

I was at State the same time as Will Clark. My freshman year (1981), we had a guy on our hall in Hightower who was a (walkon?) pitcher for State--Steve King--about the same size as Clark, maybe a little taller. Steve was a great guy and smart (Computer Engineering major). Throughout his time at State, Steve stayed on the team and played, but was relatively unknown, especially in his first couple years.

It was clear to MSU students that Will Clark was cocky as hell. One night at Teddy's, Will and a bunch of baseball players were sitting at a big table and being loud as hell. I had been drinking on the other side of the place and was pretty drunk. Saw Will over there and thought I'd "take him down a notch". So I slowly walked up to their table, went up to Will, and like I was approaching a Hollywood superstar, meekly asked, "Hey, are you......Steve King?".

Will got this crazy look of disbelief and said "Huh? No!". Then the whole table of baseball players erupted in laughter.

Same here. I met Clark when I was a kid once at State, then later when he was with the Giants. He helped with a Lenny Dykstra baseball camp that I went to. He couldn't have been nicer either time.
