So, which one is more prestigious to win, the SEC regular season or the SEC

tournament? Having some discussions with some Reb friends of mine. Regardless of the outcome yesterday, the regular season is much harder to win. Course the tourney championship gets you into the NCAA's but I don't think a regular season overall SEC champion has ever been denied the NCAA's, is that correct?

I'm a Rebel and I think winning the regular season is more prestigious.

However, winning the tourney is a helluva lot more fun and exciting.

I would much rather have the regular season because that's indicative (usually) of strength over a season. I'd also take a tournament championship any time someone wanted to give it to us. But if I had to pick one, I'd take the regular season.

I'm sure the regular season champ would be in, but IS there such a thing as a "regular season champ"? The SEC website lists only the tournament champs as the conference champions.

That's not even a legitimate question. The SEC champion is the regular season champion. Hell, Georgia won the tournament title one year with a 4-12 league record. Not to minimize what the Bears did this weekend at all, but it was just one weekend.

That isn't even a debate, the regular season champion IS the SEC champion and is MUCH more prestigious. The SEC tourneys of '96, '02 and '09 (and the one we were jipped out of in '10) were all great but they pale in comparison to the undisputed, unshared 2004 SEC championship that we have. Of course in '91 we did share with LSU and KY had the better record but were on probation. And the same goes for baseball, anybody can get hot over a 4 or 5 day period to win a tournament but the grind over a regular season determines who the best overall team is.

It depends on what Ole Miss wins...

Since they just won the SEC tourney title, then that is more prestigious in my opinion.

Now if we had won the regular season title, and gotten bounced in the first round of the tourney, then clearly the regular season is more prestigious.

I basically use the same criteria I do when evaluating recruiting rankings, baseball rankings and football predictions, I believe the one that has Ole Miss ranked above MSU is the most accurate.

Of course the regular season title is more prestigious.

Neither are tremendously prestigious, but the regular season is more so

In college basketball, for better or worse, the NCAA is really all that matters. Second in the regular season, don't win the tourney, but make the elite 8? Your season was better than the team who won the regular season or tourney, but lost in the Sweet 16.

Regular season is more prestigious and harder to win. I think it's ridiculous that the tourney champ gets an auto-bid

Since we're talking SEC basketball here, which is more prestigious? The Kia Soul? Or the Hyundai Elantra?

So I guess what you are saying is that most living OM fans, until this weekend, had never really given it much thought since it depends on what Ole Miss wins. Zing.

It's not clear how you share a "championship." In 2000, there were 4 teams with the same SEC records (Fla, Ken, Tenn, LSU). It would seem there has to be one declared champion of the conference, and the SEC seems to recognize the tourney winner (only place champions are mentioned) and I can't find anything about "regular season" champions. Wiki lists them, but there is nothing "official" that I can find. Guess you hang a banner either way. Do our banners make a distinction?

It's not hard at all and I have no idea where you got the idea that the tournament winner is the conference champion. You're just wrong. The regular season winner is the conference champion. In years where more than 1 team finishes with the best record, they're all champions.

Page 66 of the SEC Men's Basketball Media Guide lists the SEC Champions for each year. Yes, all four of those schools were listed as champions for 2000. There are no tie-breakers for regular season champions in any SEC sport. (Except for football, sort of. If you tie for the division title, you have to win the tie-breaker to have a shot at the conference title.)

Copy/paste from the media guide: "From 1933‐50 the SEC Champion was determined by a tournament, except for 1935. Since 1951, when the round‐robin schedule was introduced, the title has been decided by a winning percentage on the conference schedule. From 1951‐64 the round‐robin consisted of 14 games. In 1965 and 1966 it was expanded to 16 games. From 1967‐91 the round‐robin schedule was 18 games. In 1992 the SEC split into an Eastern and Western Division, but continued to recognize an SEC Champion based on a winning percentage over the 16‐game conference schedule. The league also began awarding division championships. In 1979 the tournament was renewed with the winner receiving the SEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament."

Side note: It took me three attempts over several hours to download this stupid thing. The SEC website sucks.

3 hours sucks but I appreciate the info to use against this bear at work. Would it be too hard for the SEC to post past champions on their webpage under... I dunno- "champions".

Regular season by a mile. I think we should do away with all conference tournaments in basketball and baseball. Play another week of OOC.
