The US was seemingly a lock to host the 2022 WC, and for some reason they picked Qatar, who has never even qualified for a WC.

You wouldn't even have to build new stadiums here. Instead, they chose a country that is spending a ton of money on new TEMPORARY stadiums that are being packed up and moved elsewhere after the tournament. Yes, they can do that apparently.

And after the mess in Sochi, guess who gets to host in 2018? That's right, Russia. Should've been England and USA hosting the 2018/2022 World Cups, yet they chose Russia and Qatar.

Yes. And it's not going to get any better any time soon. For either the Olympics or the World Cup. The USA is considering not even putting in a bid for the next round of Olympic bidding.

I'm sure the problem is a lack of unions and has nothing to do with the fact that they are workers in 17ing qatar. If those dubmasses would just unionize, they'd suddenly have all the benefits of working in a first world country rather than what is basically a fossil fuel rich, family owned dictatorship.

Yeah. It's real. it was real common back in those days. And a lot of guys died back then. I certainly don't defend what the unions became, but in the beginning there was a real need for them.

Well they have around the same number of people. 2 million for Qatar, 2.7 for Chicago. I'd say the fact that Qatar's construction industry can match the body count of Chicago's crime industry puts things in perspective a bit. Quite a feat.

I thought I was going to die Sunday in Chicago. But it had more to do with St. Paddy's day than crime.

Screw that. The highest I've ever been up when working was around 350 feet over the Gulf of Mexico while painting the boom of a crane on our rig. We were tied off but it was still scary as hell when the wind was blowing because it would bounce pretty bad near the end. Worst part was the damn thing was painted yellow and the rig was grey. We couldn't drip the yellow paint on the rig so they swung that bad boy out over the water while you were on it.

4000 feet would not be an option for me. I'd rather go hungry.

We have a large 4' x 3' picture by the same photographer hanging up in our dining room. Its of these guys sitting on the beam eating lunch.

...worker's comp/personal injury attorney for a wife.

Its a cool reference to think about how less than 100 years ago, that is how workers were expected to do.
We have come a very long way. I get annoyed at government intrusion and growth all the time, but I also recognize when its time to shut up and accept that government rules being enforced on employers may limit economic growth, but be worth the limitation in the end.
