Honduras will be in if they draw at Jamaica. Mexico will qualify for a playoff berth versus New Zealand if they draw against Costa Rica and could advance over Honduras if Mexico wins by two goals and Honduras loses to Jamaica.

EUROPE

Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Switzerland have qualified with four more in today.

Group A: Belgium has qualified. Croatia is assured of second but not a playoff berth.
Group B: Italy has qualified. Bulgaria, Denmark, and Armenia are fighting for second place and a playoff berth. The Czechs can finish second but they won't qualify for the playoffs so they're eliminated.
Group C: Germany has qualified. Sweden has clinched second place and a playoff berth.\
Group D: The Netherlands has qualified. Turkey, Romania, and Hungary are fighting for second place. With Romania playing Estonia and Turkey facing the Netherlands, it's likely that the Romanians finish second. However if Turkey and Romania lose, Hungary is facing Andorra and should win easily.
Group E: Switzerland has qualified. Iceland is a point ahead of Slovenia and are fighting for second with Iceland at Norway and Slovenia at Switzerland.
Group F: Russia qualifies if they draw against Azerbaijan. Portugal is in second but not quite assured of a playoff spot. They face Luxembourg and can advance if Russia loses and Portugal has a blowout win.
Group G: Bosnia has the advantage over Greece thanks to goal differential. If Bosnia defeats Lithuania, they advance. If not, it's the Greeks as they face Liechtenstein. Second place will be in the playoffs.
Group H: England advances with a win versus Poland. If they draw, Ukraine will likely advance since they play San Marino. Montenegro needs San Marino to win for a chance at the playoffs.
Group I: Spain advances with a draw against Georgia. France is guaranteed second and a playoff spot and could win the group if they defeat the Finns by enough goals and Georgia pulls off the road shocker .

SOUTH AMERICA

Argentina and Columbia have already advanced. Ecuador and Chile face each other today. If they draw, both advance to Brazil. Uruguay can advance if they defeat Argentina by enough goals. Otherwise, they have a playoff spot against Jordan.

AFRICA

Ghana and Egypt face each other today. The other matches were played on Saturday and Sunday. Burkina Faso beat Algeria, 3-2; Ivory Coast defeated Senegal, 3-1; Nigeria won at Ethiopia, 2-1; and Tunisia tied visiting Cameroon, 0-0. The second legs are next month.

Thread Hijack: What would you do if you were Klinsman?

Mexico could potentially finish 5th (and not quality World Cup 2014) if a couple of things happen tonight:
1. They lose to Costa Rica (this isn't too far-fetched - after all, Costa Rica is 2nd in the group and are playing at home)
2. Panama beats the USA

In this case, Panama would steal the 4th Spot, and Mexico would be sitting at home next year during the World Cup.

So my question is this: If YOU were Klinsman, would you potentially throw the game at Panama in hopes to screw over your chief rival (Mexico)?

Edited to Add: There are no real consequences for the USA with a loss tonight. We finish #1 in the group regardless.

I'd

play to win, if I were a player. I don't really care (as a player) what happens to Mexico. It won't affect me.

The whole "stick it to your rival" is more of a fan deal.

While I don't think it was done intentionally, we are sending a weakened squad to Panama because of injuries. Dempsey, Donovan, Bradley, Gonzalez, and Jones are all back with their club teams due to small injuries, and Howard is back in England just because. Don't be surprised it we get beat.

If you want to grow some wool, read ESPN's article about Jurgen- http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/relegationzone/id/1415?cc=5901

You've got to play to win. And I have no doubt that's what Klinsman will do. BTW, did anyone see the late goal to give Mexico the win over Panama? They don't make that goal and they probably really are looking at not even making the playoff.

Edit: Update...

Bosnia has defeated Lithuania 1-0 and advance to the World Cup as winners of UEFA Group G. Greece defeated Liechtenstein and finishes second in Group G.

Iceland and Norway drew 1-1 & Switzerland defeated Slovenia 1-0 in Group E. Iceland finishes second in Group E and qualifies for the playoffs. Iceland advancing to the playoffs is a major upset as they were in Pot 6 in the World Cup draw two years ago. This may be the rough equivalent of Florida Gulf Coast advancing to the Sweet 16-- UEFA/FIFA style.

Russia advances as Group F winners with a draw against Azerbaijan. Portugal is in the playoffs.

Romania is in the playoffs as second place in Group D.

Probably not intentional but I don't think Klinsman was all that upset. I've noticed he's been playing a lot of guys who probably won't make the World Cup roster and even guys who will have been playing different positions. If there's any indicator that the US is in the best shape it's ever been in it's the fact that really good players will be left off the final roster because there isn't any room for them.

We're not going to get a seed and we've already clinched the #1 spot in our group. I think he doesn't necessarily care about the win but wants to see some bright spots in some crazy lineup tonight. No one has been able to take over Bradley's spot with much success. Someone stepping up there is more important than a W.

Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Bosnia, England, and Spain have qualified for the World Cup.

In the playoffs: Croatia (A), Sweden (C), Romania (D), Iceland (E), Portugal (F), Greece (G), Ukraine (H), and France (I).

Playoffs will be between drawn seeded and unseeded countries.

At the moment, the seeded countries would be: Croatia, Portugal, Greece, and Sweden.
Unseeded countries: Romania, Iceland, Ukraine, and France.

Here's to hoping that France and Portugal get drawn together. Maybe it will make up for Henry's handball against Ireland in the last WC playoff

Africa: Ghana 6, Egypt 1 - Final - 1st leg

The Egyptians need a near-miracle to defeat the team that knocked the USMNT out in 2010 in order to advance to the World Cup.

Yea that was awful. I felt terrible for Ireland and their fans. We really are spoiled playing in CONCACAF. We are expected to qualify and should qualify every cycle whereas it is questionable for every single European side every cycle. Sometimes those teams get their hearts ripped out on a day like today or in the playoffs. I couldn't imagine if we did not make the World Cup since we have qualified every year since I've been alive. And the thing that makes it worse is it only occurs every 4 years, so if you don't make the World Cup one year it is at least 8 years since your last one.

Ghana looked dominant today. I could see them in the semis of the WC. Cote d'Ivoire is another team that could advance if drawn in the right group.

Going forward, it will be hard for the US or Mexico not to at least make the playoff. Mexico has been horrific, and they still need only a draw for the playoff.

Two injury time goals to pull out a 3-2 US win over Panama allows Mexico, which lost to Costa Rica to make the playoffs. Honduras drew with Jamaica and advance to the World Cup.

Chile defeats Ecuador 2-1 but both advance to the World Cup.

Uruguay finishes fifth in CONMEBOL and faces Jordan in a playoff next month.

Mexico finishes fourth in CONCACAF and faces New Zealand in a playoff.
