Was his conditioning this bad last year down at 133? He looks like a shell of himself.
He's not a shell, he just is what he is. He had one nice tournament run as a freshman. He didn't replicate it last year at the same weight, expecting him to do it again at a higher weight is just fooling yourself. He's closer to the round of 16 guy last year than the fluky fourth his freshman year.

Bailey v Peterson in the Consi Semi's. Let's make that the wrestle off for the 141 lb spot for the rest of the year.
Unfortunately 141 is a bust this year. Credit to Brands for going to the portal, but Bailey was a mistake. Got his AA accolade as a freshman and now seems uninterested in wrestling, much less improving. Meanwhile Peterson hasn't really improved either--not sure he'd even qualify for NCAAs.

If anything it seemed like his nationals performance last year was more of a fluke performance. He came In to nationals as the 3 seed and was like 23-4 and had just beat Romney who ended up taking 3rd

He was really good last year too.

Yep...and Spencer Lee got pinned by the Okie State guy on his way to an NCAA championship. Again, I feel much better about JW and see him AAing. :)
157 is absolutely stacked! Not sure I feel that good about either of the LR transfers finishing on the podium.

Jesus, I'm tired of watching Bailey. Getting him was a mistake. New solution please.
If the plan was to RS Bailey to let him grow into 141 that's great. However, we have zero other option at 141 and everyone involved with the program should have known that. There never was, nor is there, another solution!

No one ever accused our coaching staff of being smart, forward-thinking individuals.

Solid to elite former wrestlers, and they could share that knowledge as coaches to results that were once great and are now......."wanting" at best...........but smart? Progressive? Possessing the gift of "foresight"?

Novak was 5th last year, no slouch. I agree--bad decision to try and ride in 3rd. Thought Ludington looked good on his feet.
The very pro-Brands Facebook fan page says the match was officiated terribly. What’s that about?

I would hope Bailey was "vetted" prior to handing him a bag.

Without Tom's money buddy, you'd have a hard time convincing anyone else to donate more if these are the dog crap results you get.
Beyond pathetic.

He beat Romney two out of three (was pinned their first match) and the only other guy in the top 20 he faced was Braeden Davis and lost 1-0. Then lost to Frost and Fugitt at Nationals. So he was 2-4 against guys in the R16 or better level, 21-1 against everyone else. Honestly if he could repeat that at 141 I'd still take it, but going to take some work. But I keep thinking how close he was to beating Vega and he can have a puncher's chance vs anybody that isn't a brute like Mendez and Echemendia that are clearly way too strong for him. Romney has also move up to 141 without any success so far either.

I heard that 157 is paper thin this year. I don’t believe it, but really smart people do. Some of the smartest

I think 149, and to a lesser extent 285, are really thin this year

Heres an idea on the nil money! Pay after the performance goals are met! Or atleast 1/2.

At this point I’d rather watch kale at 41, at least he won’t quit out there. That was an embarrassing effort by Nasir. Need a new answer for 41 next year. Maybe Nasir would be better at 33 and can replace Drake for a year but him at 41 has been awful

As of the most recent rankings...

I think Watters, Duke, Taylor, Robideau and Shapiro are all title contenders...and none of them are ranked #1 currently. I think 157 is plenty tough!

Add to that Williams has been majored by Zerban and Webster this year. It's definitely going to be tough road for him to AA.

This is a bit revisionist. This is the worst he's looked his entire career. Was his 4th place finish a little flukey? Maybe a little, but he was still a clear AA caliber guy and a top 8 seed for a reason both years.

For whatever reason, he's clearly drowning in the Iowa training environment. Impossible to say whose fault that is, if it's anybody's fault, but to act like this version of Bailey is reflective of his past two years is quite misleading.

He’s too small I would assume. But, it’s not a scooby doo mystery whose fault it is. Take a look at all the guys they’ve ruined over the years unfortunately.

Why exactly does he deserve credit for having rich donors pay a guy to fill a whole that is solely a result of his own shortcomings?
This. The portal is a high-risk venture that fails more than it succeeds. For every Buchanan, there are three Teemer's who flame out due to age, injury, lack of motivation, etc...

Brands has used it as a bandaid to cover for his own systemic failures as the leader of the program. That's not how you build a consistent winner.

I can't believe Tom still can't see that.

Main two takeaways, I don't know what the deal is with Bailey and at this point I don't care. Start sending Petersen out. Ludington is really bad on bottom and will need a good amount of improvement to be in any AA contender conversation moving forward.
