Reed (coming in to tonight)- 0.88 ERA through 30.2 IP<div>Weatherford in 2007- 3.53 ERA through 60 IP</div><div>
</div><div>Weatherford closed some big games, but Reed has just been unreal this year. </div>

Weatherford is still fresh in my mind since the 2007 season was one to remember. I think Reed is picking up that same status that Weatherford had, one where you knew the game was locked up when we made the call to him.

In 2008, Weatherford recorded a 0.85 ERA through roughly the same number of innings (31.2), although Reed surpassed that tonight. Weatherford also had a 3-1 record that year. Reed has 6 saves and no losses where as Weatherford has 7 saves with 1 loss (keep in mind, this was Polk's last year). <div>
</div><div>But from another angle, let's look where the two came from:</div><div>Aaron Weatherford in 2006: 4.28 ERA through 40.0 IP and a 5-2 record</div><div>Caleb Reed in 2009: 9.17 ERA through 17.2 IP and a 2-1 record. </div><div>
</div><div>I remember cringing when Reed used to take the mound. I think this should counter the argument pretty well that Butch Thompson doesn't know what he is doing. His work with Reed alone should show doubters that he knows his stuff. </div>

A lot of the times the RP or closer inherits runners that don't apply to his ERA if he gives up a run scoring double or something.

Maybe that's just my personal preference, though.

until the last game of the season- which was Polk's last game ever at MSU.

As far as Butch- not just Caleb, but our entire bullen- we've cut our bullpen ERA down four runs. Yes, I know, the bats, but that is still a huge difference. Pollorena was a great pick-up, Girodo has improved, Statz has gotten better as the year has gone on, and as much as Devin Jones has struggled, he is still light years better than what he was when he got to MSU. And then the freshmen like Norris, Evan Mitchell, and Taylor Stark as well as Hunter Renfroe- all have done well at times.

the dynamics of the game have even changed this year. That isn't to say one was better than the other, but to say from watching both pitchers work, they both certainly have their strengths and both are some of the best closers in the conference. <div>
</div><div>Todd, I didn't realize our bullpen ERA was down that far. The strength of our starting pitching has stagnated compared to last year, but our bullpen has come through for us more times than not while making strides in becoming more and more effective. </div>

....is seeing him come in from playing in the outfield, covered with sweat, and throwing smoke in the 8th and 9th inning pitch after pitch like a completely fresh player.
