So State retains one of the best centers in the nation for his senior year- in a time when NOBODY stays for their senior year- and then, he convinces him to pay for it himself to free up a scholarship. Huge.

to sacrifice the scholarship for the sake of the team. Plus, it makes me feel a little better about the Sidney situation, for no real reason. And I guess this explains why Varnado's stint in the draft was so short.

the Varnado's are taking out a "loan" to pay for this years 5k tuition

Stans played the angle: after you get drafted next year, that 5k becomes nothings in comparison to the amount of money you'll be making after you're drafted

Nice work Stans

Hopefully, this is an indicative pre-cursor of BOTH Riek and Sidney being cleared

yesterday, Sidney becomes eligible to enroll .. today, Jarvis forfeits his scholarship .. let's hope this trend continues.

Stans tells the top shot blocker and best player on our team that if he tries to go to the NBA draft that he will not have a scholarship if he decides to bless State with a senior season? For a player with a truck load of controversy and that will probably never get cleared to play college ball? This doesn't seem like ******** to you?

Rick would have given anything for him to come back, what a load of **** this story is.

Don't get me wrong, it is fantastic for State and mighty big of him and his father. Just proves how solid of a guy he is and his family but if you believe this load of crap, you are an idiot.

If I was in "America's leading shot blocker's" shoes, I would have laughed in Stans face. Absolutely amazing.

Just think it is funny that people will believe anything they read. I am thrilled he is coming back. I don't think that if I was a recruit I would feel very comfortable with how Stans handles his players testing the waters but that is just my opinion.

I am sure if it was the choice of cutting Benock or Varnardo, an easy decision would have been made.

best "amateur" player is giving up his scholarship so that we can give it over to a guy that the NCAA is trying to deem a "professional".

State is one of the less expensive schools in the country, and if Swat gets an NBA deal for a million dollars, 10,000 isn't that much. It's kind of like a nice contribution to the school.

I actually wish we could have kept Holcombe to- it would make us three deep. The more the merrier.

Jeez. Why would Jarvis' dad say this then?
Jarvis Varnado and his family have agreed to pay their own way for the Bulldog center to attend school at State this year, Varnado's father, Winston, said today.

"We had discussed it with coach (Rick) Stansbury and he let us know that if Jarvis put his name in the draft, and he had a chance to get Renardo Sidney, we'll take out a loan so he can come back to school," Winston Varnado, the coach at West Point High School, said.

cleared...no?

isn't this all based on whether or not both get cleared?

seems like everyone is assuming that both are...

It would be an impossible rule to enforce. What they do in football and basketball is count any scholarship money a player gets against the scholarship limits even if it's an academic scholarship.

MSU compliance director Bracky Brett said that as long as Sidney remains enrolled, he will be on scholarship, even if he is not cleared by the NCAA.

Varnado cannot get his scholarship back.
