But for all you Ebay sellers, I've never understood why a seller would begin an auction at a price below his reserve? If you're not willing to sell the golf cart for less than $X,XXX dollars, then why begin the bids below $X,XXX ? What good does that do? I see bids where the bidding has started but the reserve has not yet been met, and I can't help but wonder about it.

Sorry, I think this is kind of sports-related because a golf cart is kind of sporty.

Sorry, I think this is kind of sports-related because a golf cart is kind of sporty.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">It gives you flexibility to accept the offer or not and it gives you the ability to negotiate with the buyer after the auction has ended.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span> One other thing it gives you a peace of mind.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I sell a good bit and never use reserve. I do agree with you, just start the bidding at the minimum price you are willing to accept, then move on.

One reason is the competitive nature of Ebay. Once somebody starts bidding on a "good deal" it is hard sometimes for them to stop even when the price starts getting close to retail. Also,many buyers are more reluctant to bid on items that have a reserve price.

So.. the more bidders you can involved, the better chance you have of starting a bidding war.
