I'm a graduate student playing no competitive sports and I still find time to train more than a man whose entire livelihood is based on physical condition. You are right to be angry. If he doesn't have the endurance to run more than 3 miles, walk 10, hit the elliptical, swim, do more! He should be in the gym 4 hours a day at this point. Hopefully this isn't the whole story. If it is, this is egregious.<div>

He'll become motivated (after we call him out every day), learn about workout programs (such as the p90x thread), and discover the health benefits of eating OEC for every meal.

..We are all familiar with the MSU poster who doesn't think you should critique players unless you yourself have once coached for a living.

But to see a MSU poster saying one of MSU's best basketball players should be ashamed because his workout regiment is not as vigorous as that of the MSU poster...that's a new one.

I suppose your Navy SEALS-type workout also consist of hours a day in a hot gym playing pick-up games.

If only you could maneuver on the low block like Sidney, shoot 3 point shots like Sidney & possessed his overall natural basketball talent.

Then maybe your ridiculous comparison might hold some sway.

What he is doing is not working. For a guy his size, playing ball and doing that running, he would have to eat a ton of food to still be above 270lbs.

Anyone that weighs as much as Sidney, that isn't dropping lbs by the week, isn't pushing himself.

..which means he's on pace to lose around 20 more lbs before the start of the season.

I get it: The new popular trend here is to hate on Sidney for not possessing the svelte figure all you workout warriors possess (when the reality is the lot of you are a bunch of fatasses).

All I know is he is losing weight & attempting to improve his game.

But if you are going to go genespage on Sidney & claim you are working out more vigorously than him, then please keep your mouth shut this fall about the football team, unless you once coached football.

..would give it's right nut to have a Sidney who weighted 350 lbs, much less a Sidney who will have lost significant weight by the time the season starts.

Somebody from your camp making critical observations about Sidney is the height of baffoonery.

Losing 23 pounds over a month isn't working?

he gained 12 pounds last year during Thanksgiving.

Seriously though, I really hope he is losing the weight being reported. I don't think I can stand seeing another season of so much talent hidden under a large later of fat. If we see a 40 pouds or so lighter Sidney this season I would definitely expect great things from the guy.

So Sidney is pushing himself is what you are saying correct?

Because he lost 23 pounds over the past month. That's about 5 pounds a week, 1 pound a day.

It really wouldn't matter what amount of weight he has lost. He was so out of shape last year that they would ***** if he had lost 50 lbs and looked like Aurnoldhh in his prime.

He does have to prove something after being in dismal shape last season. Couple that with the fact that we have all these triathlete posters and there will always be venom spit in Sidney's direction when they mention weight.

What makes you think that? The Jones tweet said "since last year." I assume that means since the end of basketball season. Our last game was March 11--four months ago today. At two pounds a week for 17 weeks--conservative for somebody his size, trainer or no--that's 34 pounds he should have lost. He's not devastatingly behind that pace, but he's probably not doing all he could/should.

what he is or is not doing, but for his *** not to be in the gym just about all day training would be a complete joke. It takes all I got and is difficult with work, but i get 3 hours a day and I am in no way trying to get into the NBA. Again, I have no clue what he is or isn't doing, but anything less than a full day training for someone in his position is pathetic. His job is basically to be in shape. Give me that life any day of the week and twice on Sundays and I'm scoring "Optimum" on the PST to get into BUD/S.

at one time was that his max weight before last season started was 312. We know he lost 20 pounds during the season. 23 more puts him at 269, which matches the 270 in Marcello's blog today. I know he's now on record as saying he wants to get to 250, but that was his high school graduation weight. I don't know about you guys, but the only way I could get to my high school graduation weight as a college junior would've been in a POW camp. I'm guessing that for a guy as big-boned as he is, and with the rule of diminishing returns, it would be extremely difficult for Sidney to continue losing weight much under 270.

and that they have no place on the board but read something about this topic in the last Journal of Athletic Training. Here is the linkfor those of you that like to read but here is the part dealing with weight loss.<div>
</div><div><div>"Body composition adjustments should be gradual, with noexcessive restrictions or unsafe behaviors or products. On average, weight loss goals should be approximately 1 to 2 lb (0.5 to0.9 kg) per week but should not exceed 1.5% of body weightloss per week.1,122</div><div>A higher rate of weight loss indicates dehydration or other restrictive or unsafe behaviors that will negatively affect performance and health. One pound (0.5 kg) offat is equal to 3500 kilocalories of energy; therefore, increasesor decreases in calories to the level needed to maintain ideallean mass will help to achieve body fat goals." (8th page 1st column 1st full paragraph)</div></div><div>
</div><div>I agree that he should never have reached the weight that he did but he is trying to get it off safely without sacrificing and possibly improving his on court performance. Assuming he was 6'9" 300 lbs, he would have a BMI of 32.14 which would place him as Class I obese. On average people who go on "The Biggest Loser" lose 25% of their body weight over 3 months. 25% of 300 is 75 pounds and if he lost 23 in one month, I would say he is right on target, FWIW.</div><div>

The guy ran 3 miles a day 6 days a week. I don't do that, but I am also able to recognize that 3 miles a day 6 days a week is hardly some Blake Griffin rising sophomore year workout. Google that and read about his training out in the Bay Area. Sidney's reported regimen is like a walk after work with the dogs and kids compared to Griffin's.
Oh, and he did 1 on 1 work too. He was in a city he doesn't live in, so he pretty much had basketball and only basketball to focus on and he ran for what should be 25 minutes at worst for an average college kid and did some 1 on 1 work.

Seriously, google Griffin's workout from back then, it's well documented. Then compare.

I am all for Sidney working out and losing weight. His obvious weakness last year was his Baby Huey resemblance and working out will clearly help.
But 3 miles a day and some 1 on 1 work each day when you have nothing else to do is simply not an extreme workout, yet you defend it like it is.

If only you could maneuver on the low block like Sidney, shoot 3 point shots like Sidney & possessed his overall natural basketball talent.

Then maybe your ridiculous comparison might hold some sway.

I'm hoping "last year" doesn't mean "since December"--meaning some of his in-season weight loss is included in the 23 pound figure. The lack of specificity makes it all the more suspicious. How can we trust anything we hear about him? If he had a record of responsibility, we wouldn't be having this conversation in the first place.

"Being reported" is the key here. With Sidney at the controls, he can look like an All-American on paper. And maybe the Thanksgiving thing should be taken seriously.

And Sidney REALLY doesn't, based on this info. 3 miles is NOTHING. If you are in any kind of shape, you can run it in fewer than 30 minutes. <div>
</div><div>And I'm glad that he's lost some weight, but he is still not a true competitor and probably never will be based on his actions.</div><div>
</div><div>Don't just love the guy because he's a MSU player; he's been a huge disappointment and generally made our school look like **** ever since he arrived. He's got a chance to turn it around, but if it happens, it will be due to talent and not effort unless something changes in a major way.</div>

unbelievable. We have a gym at the office. That's an hour at lunch. Gym after work for two hours. I would think a student would easily be able to pull 5 hours. Using the term "student"'for him is a joke, too. That kid probably spends 0 hours on school a year.

playing totally out of shape. Being down 23 pounds right now is a huge benefit. Even if he only loses 10 more, he will be a force this season.

Despite his 17 ups last year Sidney actually had a pretty good year statistically. If he's down 30 pounds by the start of the season then look out.
