that they are really no longer relevant. Being an independent in this day and time is not a good thing, especially when your rivalry games are against ****** Big 10 teams..Notre Dame hasnt won a bowl game since 1993, and even Bama has a NC since they won one. College Football is passing you by

They really do belong in the Big 11, but their TV deal is messing things up.

Maybe there's a way that they can join the Big 11 and still keep their deal.

Even if they played a crappy Big 11 team like Iowa or Indiana, it would still be more interesting than them playing random people like BYU or North Carolna, or Stanford.

It is amazing what kind of following they have for no real apparent reason. I guess some people like them as bandwagon fans when they were little and ND didn't suck. At least the retards in Alabama are in the same state as the school. Just because you are catholic doesn't mean you have to pull for ND. Isn't it a private university? How big is enrollment?

Editted to add: I think they compete in the Big East in most sports.

that they could go 15 years without winning a bowl game. Of course, if they didn't keep getting invited to bowls 2 tiers higher than the ones they should be in, they'd probably have a couple of bowl wins in that time span.

are in New York City, which has no real team to pull for other than Army, Rutgers, and Syracuse at the D-I level, and since New York has a high Catholic population, as well as Irish-American, they have a large group as a result. Then they have a huge fanbase in Chicago, and while they aren't in the same state as Chicago, they are less than 100 miles from the city.

So, they have a huge number of fans in two of America's largest cities, hence the TV deal. That's why they have a big rivalry with USC in LA as well.

an hour ago because I suggested that ND dumbed down their schedule this year to get more wins. I also made the assertion that there is no reason in this world that ND should suck, but they do year in and year out.

they are already a member for other sports. Big East football blows hard, and they would have a chance to actually get to a BCS bowl each year.
hell, there are only 8 football schools in the conference too, so joining would make 9 schools.
that would mean each team could have 8 conference games...it just makes sense and fits well.

but they make WAY more money how they have it right now.

It's not a myth, it's the truth. They have huge fanbases in Chicago and NYC, but they have lots of fans in every state of the union. Check out the crowds when they play on the road. The TV contract must not be a bad deal for NBC, since they renewed it recently. They are just falling victim to the same thing that USC fell victim to in the 90's and other former powerhouse schools like Michigan and UT are falling victim to now. They used to be able to recruit on name only, but now that even the tiniest of schools play on TV and get national exposure, they have to work a little harder at recruiting and can't just hire anybody to coach them. USC figured it out, and is a national power again. Alabama figured it out as well. Weis is an idiot and should have never been hired. Same goes for that piece of **** Willingham. ND needs a program builder, but they still operate under the "we're Notre Dame" mentality - that they can just plug anybody in there and win NC's.

have Notre Dame as their 2nd team. They are called Roman Catholics. Certainly, not all RCs are de facto ND fans but many are. Frankly, I don't blame them, if there was a real Lutheran program I'd be them.

They also have higher academic standards than many schools. They have excellent graduate programs in many areas, particulary theology and history.

I have 4 friends that say they are ND fans, none catholic. They say they have just always liked them. Why them and not Bama or FSU or Penn St. I guess ND has the whole mystic with TD Jesus and Knute Rockne. I would at least go for FSU because those chicks are smoking.

$&#^& sake) turning them down was a pretty big statement. Your high academic standards, ****** weather, and ugly women mean the college football world has passed you by.

Baylor and Wake Forest haven't done a whole lot on the football field for us Southern Baptists to be proud of historically.

Boston College is a Catholic college as well, and Catholics don't support them like they do ND, and that's why- tradition and history. Even if it was from a bygone era.

they will be relevant again & very soon. I'm hoping St. Nick will head up there about Christmas time. They are (easily) the most renowned program in college football history.

To understand the ND allure one would have to know the instituion. I can't say that I know their college as an outsider but I have been associated with ND alumns.

First of all, ND is a small school. 10,000 I would think. And to be accepted is no small feat. One thing I have noticed is that by and large ND alumns are world shakers. They have clout and alot of it. Another is that they seem to be instilled with a character from all those priests, I guess, that is very admirable. Most become very successful and are excellent citizens with a civic minded obligation to society.

I think they avoid belonging to a conference in football because they can. They do not need anyone else. They don't split TV money with anyone. Also, they typically play most of the big names in college football on a regular basis no matter what their talent level is. Of course they do play the somewhat weaker military academies but alot of that is out of tradition and respect.

I had a friend, who was a ND alumn, that took me to two ND games on two succesive years. And game day there is awe inspiring. It is truly the mecca of college football. There are masses of folks that never held a ticket in their hand that just want to be near the stadium. Go experience it for yourself. It will increase your jealousy ten-fold.

To say ND is not relevant is just being jealous b/c they still are, and wishing they weren't b/c they are bad.
They get national media exposure no matter what, talking heads still talk about losses like the Syracuse one like it's a big deal. They wouldn't lower themselves to joining a conference b/c they think they're better off not doing so, and they're right. Their tv contract doubles or triples what they would get as a member of the big IX, and in years where they make a BCS bowl, they don't have to share that money w/ anyone.
They are relevant b/c they have tons of money, influence, and exposure, and they can hire or buyout anyone they want. FSU and Miami are teams that could be considered not relevant anymore once they fall off the national scene for a few years, but never ND
They are the Yankees, with attention paid to them win or lose

the difference between Baylor/WF and Notre Dame says a lot. You also apparently don't understand the difference between Baptists and R. Catholics.

ND's game day experience is no better than Ohio State, Tennessee, or a handful of other schools when their teams are doing well. Their campus is beautiful, but you can get the same gameday experience at several schools.

Its hard to respect a school whose pregame includes idiots in kilts dancing around and whose fanbase includes 20,000+ fans wearing Rocket Ismail or Ron Powlus jerseys in 2008.
