We never had a shot.
Not exactly sure how he ended up with those as his final choices but I do remember some of the sidebard stuff that went on.
USM had a really good shot at him. They were recruiting lights out back then and were playing at a very high level. They had some players that could play for anybody. They took advantage of what we now call five stars as well as diamonds in the roughandcoached them up. My gosh, they got sky high for us. I don't think they were in a conference back then so easily the SEC teams were the games they circled.
Since there was a better than average shot at him ending up inHattiesburg, it was a huge concern for State fans knowing that we'd see him lining up against us. As things wound down and USM stayed in the hunt, it got almost obsessive. No message boards, obviously. You called up your buddies and asked 'heard anything' andran with the latest rumors. To get any official word, you had two choices: The Clarion Ledger or the schools' SID. The C-L was actually fairly responsible back then. Original content. Investigative reporting (as opposed to lazy) and good coverage. In order to get quicker info, you could call the SID offices but they must have gotten hundreds of calls a day and they were really short with you when you called. Then somebody got the bright idea to get a recorded message that you could call and get the latest scoop. They were actually pretty good about updating it each day and sometimes multiple times a day.I think Imust have called State's 1,000s of times in the early 80s. Living out of state, it was the only option. 601-325-3861 if I'm not mistaken.Sorry if this is too much.
Anyway, a lot of State fans would call the USM line to find out if Marcus had signed with them. To appreciate the angst, I have to stress how badlyUSM and State hated each other back then. May still, but in the early 80s they were - by far - thebest team in the state. So if they had gotten Marcus, it would have made them any better.
I remember the night I called and heard the terse voice on the recording say "Marcus Dupree signed with Oklahoma." Click. Awesome. Then, I didn't care where he went.
Before that happened,Texas and Oklahoma both thought they had a shot at him and it quicklybecamehigh stakes. During this time, the A & M supporters weren't just worriedthat he could end up at Texas: they did something. They startedfunnelling resources to Hattiesburg to help with the Eagles' cause.Since Oklahoma was in the Big Eight and Texas/Texas A & M were in the Southwest Conference, A & M didn't care that much if OU got him but they'd rather the Sooners not have that much of a stronger team since they recruited Texas heavily.
The ace in the entire deal was Barry Switzer. The many wasn't scared and absolutely did whatever needed doing. Bootlegger's son was ruthless and unbelievably successful.
In recent years, do you recall that Marcus'son came out of high school and supposedly had commited to Alabama early in the process? Say 02 or 03? Shula years. Don't recall whatever happened to Marquez Dupree.
