It's like Cohen x10. What makes him such a good hire? I just don't see it. God knows he's a step up from Croom and should be a solid coach but again he's unproven. His predecesser who has basically the same career path and I assume the same offensive mind has been a giant flop at Colorado. Your team right now is worse than terrible. Without insulting me personally someone fill me in on what you're thinking.

..that he was the one coach we thought we had no shot at. Graham, the OU coordinator, Turner Gill, Patterson, an unemployed Tubberville... those all seemed plausible. But a 12-0 coach from a perennial winner with other legitimate options in his future? That's just not who we are. It's just not possible here.

Now I'm not saying he's the greatest coach in the country. Who knows what will happen, the SEC is a completely different beast. But he knows how to win. A lot. And he's used to winning.
Just like with Cohen- the reason we're all so exited because MSU is actually making the right decisions, instead of finding Croom, who was on NOBODY's short list, or re-hiring former baseball coaches.

but he has won a BCS Bowl and lost a total of 3 games in 3 years as a head coach. Who else is available with a better winning percentage and a BCS bowl win?
I'm curious to find that little tidbit out.
Our team isn't worse than terrible, it was terribly coached. Now, we probably have the tools with good coaching to win between 5-7 games next year depending on a lot of factors, not the least of which is how our opponents improve or fail to improve.
I'll say this about Petersen - with Boise State level players he beat Oklahoma in a BCS bowl a few years ago. That's impressive. What's more is the way he did it, by using the hook and ladder and statue of liberty, i.e. creative thinking.</p>

he has three losses in his career- and those came in one season. His team at Boise State has players from all over the country, so he obviously has some guys that can go out and recruit. Plus, he's not doing it with 5 star guys, Ian Johnson was a nice find, but still. He has developed QB's- Zabransky. He has gone undefeated during the regular season. In addition to beating up on the WAC, which is weak, he has also beaten the likes of Oklahoma, Oregon on the road, and I believe Oregon State.
His teams are solid in all phases of the game- offense, defense, and special teams. He is young and has been at least mentioned for every major job out there. And as far as Hawkins- guess who was calling the plays.

He took freakin Boise State... to a BCS bowl with much more talented and storied program in OU.. and beat them in one of the most memorable bowl games in history... and you say he is unproven? Have you checked his record?

I'm not dillusional enought to believe you would hire anyone close to as bad as Croom and this guy's resume doesn't blow me away at all...just the fact that Byrne wants him doesn't mean anything to me. I know Byrne is like Jesus's brother to you but let one of his coaches actually have success on the field for MSU before you allow him to sit at the left side of the God the father almighty.
What about his resume doesn't blow you away? Should he have been 38-0 instead of 35-3? Should his team of nobodies have beaten Oklahoma by 2 TD's in a BCS bowl? You've got to be trolling. Surely nobody who allegedly follows college football could be this dumb.

James was a good man. It took him a while to come around to the whole "God on earth/savior" concept from his brother but he finally did. He has a book in the New Testament but he's clearly no Paul. Byrne/=James? It could work as a comparison ultimately. We have to see "proof" on Byrne (not nearly as much as being God's vessel for writing a book of the bible) but I think he's doing alright so far. We certainly don't see him a God-like figure...just quite good with great potential.DiamondReb said:
Good. In a way, it might be a good thing if you come out of your dark ages. Your best run as a program was under Jackie Sherrill, and with exception of 94-96 (our probation period) we had probably one of our best runs in the modern era during Sherrill's stint.

Yes, they got *****-slapped by Mississippi, but they were also only 2 missed FG's away from being bowl eligible.
If MSU hires Petersen it will be a grand slam in the bottom in the 9th to win the WS (or should I say CWS).
You can't concern troll away this hire (if it happens) no matter how hard you try.

Since he lucked into a 7-5 season last year, including a comeback win in the Egg Bowl, he woke up our fans and administration to do something about our football program, which in turn caused us to have a good season, which helped wake up your athletic department to do something about Croom.
