"But I also think a lot of these guys know that eventually, I imagine, there will be change-over within the staff at some point during their careers. I hope there isn’t, it would be a great thing to say that all these guys’ four years through here they had the exact same coaching staff. But the important thing that they understood is I’m going to be there as their head coach, and the program will not change."

Last part sounds good to me.

that Mullen has not been treating this like a gateway job. Recruiting for needs, redshirting, etc. He has been doing the right things to build a program. I also think we are helped by where he is in his life. He has a young kid and a happy wife who likes it in Starkville. Doesn't mean he won't leave, but it does mean that he's not dying to get out of here. That is working in our favor.

The way he's built the program, we're going to be in good shape in 2014-2015 no matter who the coach is. Dan is building this program for the long-term, and there have been a few cases where he's sacrificed small improvement in the short-term for the long-term benefit of having a 5th year for a player. We've kind of bitched and complained when he's done it, but we're going to be real glad he did it in another couple of years.

When you do that, and you create a successful program, you lose assistants. All of the great programs lose assistants consistently. I hope that our fans all realize that in the future. It's kind of like losing players to the NFL after their junior year. It happens to the good programs. It sucks when it happens but it is also a good thing. I hope Dan really is happy. He will do nothing but get better at what he does.
