Something to think about. IF O'Connor is ready to go right now.......

Would there be advantages to our season ending in Tallahassee?

Let me make it VERY CLEAR that this is in NO WAY expressing a desire for us to lose. I am absolutely rooting for us to win and go as far as we possibly can in this post season. This is purely message board pondering.

My point is, regardless of what happens the rest of this season we are poised to initiate perhaps the biggest program building hire in our history. IF O'Connor is essentially on board, would an early exit have a strategic silver lining in that we could lock things down with him, avoid any 11th hour attempts to poach him out from under us, and give him a head start on building for next season and beyond.

I suppose you could look at it as a win-win situation regardless of what happens this weekend.

Thoughts?

Nothing is likely to be official til close to Supers weekend. Just win and know you've got a great coach and staff on the way. I don't expect to win this regional anyway.

I’m just grabbing my popcorn on this one. It’s going to be really entertaining either way.

Wouldn’t be farfetched at all for him to re-up at UVA, and everyone has a meltdown about how “SALMON got played!!!!” and/ or claim some bogus inside info about how we screwed something up in the process, even if everything was above-board both ways.

Just has the 2019 Billy Napier / 2018 Jim Schlossnagle feel to me.

Doesn't the portal stay open longer for both the current athletes on the team to transfer out?

Yep. I'm hoping we get him. But fully expecting he's staying at UVA.

You could look at it as a silver lining.
You want to win, as always, but if you don’t you just quickly turn the page to the next era.
This postseason as a whole is a “house money” situation.

It’s simple. You announce BOC as soon as he is willing to sign the contract. And you incentivize the coaches that remain with cash for 2025 postseason success. Accelerating bonuses for winning a regional, super regional, CWS finalist, and national championship. That will be plenty incentive to get max effort from folks who know they’re about to be jobless.

Sign him ASAP and let him take this team to the CWS. Like calling in an experienced reliever to finish the game, he knows the CWS landscape better than Parker.

The portal opens Monday. We'd be foolish to delay a week if we don't have to.
I'm meaning presser not just announcement of a deal. Hard to throw a big presser when we're still playing. Of course, I don't think we'll be playing so it's all theoretical. But, this would be so massive, maybe they would??

Don’t forget Chris Petersen. He was locked up and ready to sign until Gene called and asked if he was a Scientologist. **

The only reason I’m holding out any hope is because I have yet to see anyone mention a certain golf course in the Golden Triangle.

As far as MSU coaching searches go, such mentions are tantamount to telling a pitcher that he’s in the middle of a no hitter. Whenever it does come out (even in jest), it is the official leading indicator that we have jumped the shark. The burial ground will awaken, and an extension at the current school will be signed almost like clockwork.

If you can hire him, you hire him when you can, even if it derails your current team's postseason. The next five years are more important than the next month.

If we try to wait until our season ends (whenever that is), the deal likely falls apart.

So to answer the original question, we don't hope we lose, we just hire him ASAP, even if it makes things weird for our current team/staff and leads to an earlier exit than otherwise would have occurred (impossible to know anyway).

I'm responding to a direct question with a direct answer. A response to "message board pondering," if you will. Not sure what it is about this that you aren't getting.

Sign him ASAP. Let him get started on the portal and recruiting.

It should not matter to the current team/interim staff anyway. They know a new coach is coming in next year that is not in the dugout today. Let them play and see how far they can go.
