the state of Texas.

In some years, the state of Texas has hosted four regionals. Even last year, they hosted three.

There is not a team from the state of Texas that is a "lock" to even make the NCAA Tournament.

Texas A&M and Houston are squarely on the bubble.
Rice isn't safe enough to feel great if they were to suck it up in the C-USA Tourney.
Sam Houston won the Southland reg season, but have to win the tournament.

In 2012, eight teams from Texas made the tournament, 3 hosts.
In 2011, seven teams from Texas made the tournament, 4 hosts.
In 2010, six teams from Texas, 2 hosts.
In 2009, seven teams from Texas, 3 hosts
In 2008, eight teams from Texas, 2 hosts

On that note, I really wonder how the A&M move will affect Texas in the long run. Texas was able to keep them down for years, but A&M basically gave them the middle finger and walked out. TAmU has far more to sell now than UT and UT has no one to blame but themselves.

TX has too much $$ to ever be in a bad spot but TAMU has a boatload too and for sure will no longer be the red headed step child. It will be all about who hires the best coaches and gets it right but it will be a dogfight going forward. if it were poker i'd rather be playing tamu's hand than tx's

Following up on my previous comments concerning the Big 12, I didn't know that West Virginia was playing all their home Big 12 games in Charleston and Beckley (each more than 160 miles away) or that their current on-campus field was not suitable for playing conference games.

Texas made some huge blunders in conference realignment. If they'd played their cards right, they could have been in a PAC-12 West with A&M, OU, OSU, Colorado, Utah, Arizona & Arizona St. But they blew it and it's going to hurt them for a long time. A&M leaving for the SEC was a big wake-up call for them. They pretty quickly made some concessions to the rest of the Big 12 to hold that conference together. They'll be OK, but they're not going to dominate A&M in the state of Texas like they used to. And A&M is going to really hurt them in recruiting.

aTm was never going to the Pac-16...

Didnt they have to pass legislation to allow TAMU to not be in the conference as Texas? Maybe that's the trump card Texas thought they had, but A&M skirted that and left Texas high and dry. Texas' own greed and trying to keep A&M under their thumb cost them a lot more than they thought it would, I think... And will continue to for years to come.

I think if the SEC hadn't pretty much told them they would get an offer, they probably would have. But you're right. If they had gone to the PAC-12 with Texas, they'd be in basically the same situation they would have been in if they'd stayed in the Big 12. In Texas shadow. Interesting, and pretty accurate, article from early 2011 here . Like most, he missed that Texas would realize they needed to be in a conference a lot more than most people thought, both for scheduling and national playoff / major bowl access, and keep the Big 12 together. Otherwise, he's pretty much spot on. And here's an article from another guy about that same time that just makes him look like an idiot.
