especially the ones who are just making a living and are not guaranteed anything in their contracts. Coordinators and head coaches have protective buyouts while the lower level guys are on their own. The life of an assistant coach can be very difficult. They do it because they love it and hope someday to land in the catbird seat. Usually they go from city to city, working for this head coach and that one, and never get the payoff they are seeking. An assistant coach probably is fired more times in a career than in most any other profession. It does not matter how good a coach you are or how good a person you are...if the head coach is fired the assistants for the most part are always fired, too.
