That's basically what it boils down to. If your team was in the midst of a national title run and all of a sudden with 3 games left in the regular season, accusations came out threatening the eligibility of the catalyst for the national title run, you would probably want to believe any twist that came out to make it look alright for your program.

They're desperate right now to believe everything is going to be ok.
