I'm sure we promised him during recruiting that we would give him a chance to play this fall.

I want them to redshirt too. Certainly playing special teams doesn't fire these guys up.

Knowing that a lot of these athletes will take 5 years to graduate anyway, you'd think they'd rather make the most out of their 4 years of eligibility. But it letting someone play special teams or spot duty as a freshman, provided they are the most talented option available, let's us get them on campus for four years, that's fine by me.

And I do think that for most players, even playing on just special teams and spot duty makes their development move faster than it would if they were redshirting, so it doesn't both me as much that we're giving up a year when they could be full time contributors.

Believe redshirting_gaining muscle_playing sunday night football ...having 4 years to play
is better than playing special teams_gaining muscle_playing snf ...having 3 years left

Absolutely no way we could redshirt Arrington last year. He is our day 1 projected starter at SS this year. He needed the experience. We would have basically zero experience at the position without Arrington getting time there last year after Mitchell left as a 4yr starter.

Same reason that I'd be highly surprised if Redmond redshirts this year. He needs reps at CB before we lose all 3 of our experienced guys.

As far as your comparisons, the only one that's valid IMO is Michael Carr and Robert Johnson, and we'll never know on that since Carr quit.

On Richie and Beniquez, let's just trust the coaches. They'll both play if coaches believe they've got NFL potential in their future. You don't redshirt those types of guys. How would it have helped us had we redshirted Fletcher Cox? He would've still been gone in 3 years. We're going to see the same thing with both Quay Evans and Nick James most likely, IMO...
