According to the Dispatch the new HC has boosted intrest across the school quite a deal and they have enough kids to do both teams this year. They will have 24 on varsity this Friday to play West Davidson. Another article said they had 40 kids or over so that'll be enough to do JV too.

Great news for South; seems like the HC change did the trick. I wish them the best; they got a competitive game next week vs. Highland Tech to maybe pull off a W.

I honestly think they can make it this year. The Dispatch did an article about the new coach and it said they counted at least 40 total kids there. That's great for them. Last year they barely had any period. Worse case they'll do without JV.

I wouldn't be suprised if they kept him as the HC. He's boosted turnout already and has them playing varsity. He says they have great enthuasim; after seeing film of them last year that's saying a lot. They can get a W next week if they come ready for Highland Tech. Conference will be tough but they can play Chatham Central. Just baby steps for them now.

That's what I love about small school ball; just small details can affect the program. He seems to truly love the place.

The only thing that needs to be done now is that the folks in charge of the atheletic program at South Davidson needs to remove the interim tag from Coach Ellington's name.....There wouldn't be a season without him, so it's obvious that the kids like him, and his sheer determination that the Wildcats would field a team this year if he had anything to do with it, should be rewarded, and that reward is to make him the permanent Head Coach of the Wildcats!

Good luck to Coach Ellington and the Wildcats this season!

Glad things are looking up for SD. Great community with a lot of pride. Used to spend a fair amount of time in Denton back in the day, also have family from there. Coaching makes a difference. Pulling for all the YVC teams!

NM grad???

Absolutely. Early 1990s, Chad Ellington was a member of the most dominant North Moore athletic teams to run through the school, football, basketball, and baseball. There was a 10-12 year period of exceptional athletics there. Ellington also coaches South Davidson's men's basketball team. A standout in basketball at North Moore, he nailed a half court, buzzer beating shot at Alleghany High School in overtime of the state playoffs to silence the Trojan faithful just as they were in the midst of "Nah, Nah, Hey, Hey, Goodbye."

It was a good time for athletics at NM for sure. However the post is a tad bit inaccurate. Chad hit a beyond half court shot to send the game into Overtime. One of the greatest comebacks in history. Down by 7 with 52 sec left in regulation.

Great times! Chad will get the program the renewed interest needed for the kids to buy in. He is a tremendous motivator and while records can be misleading South Davidson is already more competitive than people realize.
The Wildcats will be fine in a few years

He's already had some success last night. South was 40 point dogs to West and they lost 24-0 and kept it close all night. Its the best they played West in 7 years. Granted it's not a W but it's a moral win for a program badly in need of one.

They got a potentially winnable game this week vs Highland Tech. Baby steps for South but he's paying off already

True, they need a guy who's going to stay for a while and build a program. The last guy to have success went 6-6 three years in a row and left, that was the early 2000s. Personally I think the parents are a problem, not the kids. South parents have very unrealistic expectations for that school from what I have seen...

Congrats to South; they got their first win of the season by beating Highland Tech 31-14.

Granted it's Highland Tech but it's a win for a program that badly needed a win. They have another chance next week when they got Atkins.

Baby steps for the Wildcats but I wouldn't be suprised if Ellington gets a nice reward in November at the end of the season with his job being kept.
