So I get up this morning to look at my local paper to see what happened in the LWE and Lockport games. I turn to the Southtown and find....NOTHING! CRICKETS!

So someone at the Tribune decided that the local paper should NOT to cover the #5 team in the state and another local team who is fighting to get into the playoffs for the first time in more than a few years.

Southtown my A$$.

Call the Southtown and complain to the sports editor. It might well work.

Call every AD in the state and tell them to stop starting games at 745 or later and to move the sophomore games away from Friday nights like almost every other state in the country.....

Don't most other states not have soph teams?

The other problem is with most teams are running the spread and passing so much games are lasting a lot longer.

Papers no longer send stringers out and any game stuff comes from what we send in as coaches with the exception of about two games. The Tribune doesn't even post high school scores online anymore and Suntimes only posts football. Does the southtown still post stats on Thursdays?

Morris Herald used to have great coverage of local sports not only football, but they also had 3 or more out covering the games. Now only have one.On away games the beat writer in that area covers the game and it is placed in Morris paper.....oh and Morris paper went from 5 days a week to one.
Joliet Herald used to have great local coverage and stats on Thursdays and they now don't even have a hard copy on Saturdays.

Bottom line is if no one is buying papers, then no one advertises so no one covers anything any more

So Edgy, you're telling me that it takes 18 hours to write a column and get it in the paper?

Not. Buying. it.

There are deadlines newspapers have to abide by to get stories into print the next day. It's not the fault of the reporter, like Edgy said, these games start too late for the reporter to write a full story, speak with players and coaches and get it in on deadline. If the web story takes as long as you said it did, then that's a different conversation. It sucks but unfortunately you can't expect full blown game stories in the next day's paper until changes are made with start times

LWE

Thing I could never adjust to when the articles get published is no Box Score and no stats published. I pick up Saturday's paper or look at the run down online back in pa and by midnight the story and every teams detailed stats are there including tackles. It tells me the press remains plugged into the staffs. All that said, there is no coverage compared to edgy in one clear concise place to discuss and banter with High school football fans.

So Edgy, you're telling me that it takes 18 hours to write a column and get it in the paper?

Not. Buying. it.

Like Edgy said many states do not play the JV (or sophomore) games immediately before the Varsity Games. Georgia, Texas, and Florida play on Thursdays. Alabama and Iowa on Monday.

Friday JV games are tough to make for parents, officials - basically everyone. Especially in the Chicago Area. And especially if your team plays in one of the private school leagues with games all over the metro area.

A lot of it is bout saving money. It is cheaper to pay workers to work two games on Friday than to pay for one game each day.

A couple weeks ago the Daily Herald had NOTHING about the CCHS game, but since they have won two in a row and had nice big article this past Saturday morning. I'm another one that loves to have a paper in my hand.

On Saturdays I am just looking for scores of games. Sometimes I can find them in the papers and sometimes I can't. I believe the time to get information in, is 11:00 P.M. for the next day's paper. That may not be true for all sports. I am not sure.

Press time in today's world is earlier for the next morning's paper than it used to be. Far fewer people work in the print industry too which means less people are doing more work. It is far too much work to go to press late and get the papers on the street at around 4:30-5:00 A.M when fewer people are doing it.

I remember when the USA Today was first published. I liked it because they had ALL of the west coast scores in the morning paper for .25 in the early 80s. That didn't seem to last very long though.

I like reading a physical paper like most people in my generation. But I have said many times, when our generation is gone so are the papers. Maybe before that but definitely after that. I am sure you guys all remember late afternoon editions of newspapers too. I hated to see that go away.

now everyone is glued to their Frikkin Tablets or Phablet Phones or normal sized smart phones. It will be a sad day when everything converts to the electronic version....

The Tribune has a later cutoff time for next morning's articles and scores, etc. than the Sun-Times.

I noticed yesterday that the Sun-Times gave the Cubs, Giants score of Tuesday's game of 5-2 in the 9th inning...no final. However, the Tribune not only had the final score in Wednesday's edition, they had an article. Guess that question is answered. In my opinion, in general, the Tribune is a better paper anyway.

The Tribune is head and shoulders better than the Sun-Times and that's being nice.

Here is an example to support your point. Sun-Times HS writer, Beth Long, earlier this week chose not to list 7-0 Bradley hosting 6-1 LWE as one of the top 5 or so games of this Week 8. Games involving teams with 2 and 3 losses got the nod instead.

Actually, I am fine with the Sun-Times sports section. I read both papers every day. But I was speaking in general about the two papers, the news sections, editorials, etc. along with the sports. The Trib will get you a later score.

As for Beth Long. Does anyone know her qualifications?

It's the old "nothing exists south of I55".
I'm not trying to defend the overall coverage of the papers, but I don't think they are slighting south of I-55 anymore than any other area. Four of the top ten teams in her poll are from south of I-55. What teams south of 55 do you think aren't getting respect from her? Throughout the years, the south/southwest suburbs have gotten plenty of respect from the Sun Times. LWE, MC, JC, PC, SR, HF, Lemont, RIchards have always received good coverage. I think the reason the LWE/BB game is not listed is because Beth has no clue about high school football, not a geographical bias.

This may or may not be true which is why I'd like to know her qualifications.
