We scrimmaged, we won. The end. Ok, not really, but in all seriousness, there just isn't much to learn from beating a team like UT Martin, but I'll give it a shot.

The D's tackling was turrable. I'm willing to cut them some slack, since we've tackled much better the last several games. I'll chalk it up to playing to the level of your competition. And to be fair, UTM has a pretty solid offense for a FCS team. But as we've all said 18 million times: Can we please sit Brandon Maye? He didn't even look good against an FCS team. His snaps should go to Bohanna - period.

I thought Russell took a step backwards Saturday night. He was coming off his best SEC game of his career and just wasn't very impressive. He had a bad case of happy feet all night and ran out of the pocket early a ton. His pick was yet another poor decision. He could have kept it and gotten 6-8 yards at least. He needs to have his best game of his career against Bama for us to have a chance. No throwing the ball up for grabs, no happy feet, no indecisiveness.

I was surprised Relf didn't play more, but I'm glad he didn't. Keep the hits off him and try to keep him healthy for Bama. We're going to need his mobility in that game. Jefferson & the option gave Bama fits, so having a healthy Relf will be a big key for us.

Mini-Favre had a nice night. He's definitely got some wheels. If only he were a few inches taller.

I was very impressed with Nick Griffin. Mullen can say Griffin still has a hitch when he runs, but I didn't see it. One thing is sure, he didn't look like a guy only 6-7 months removed from ACL surgery. Sure, the opponent was bad, but averaging 10 a carry is impressive no matter who you're playing.

Banks punt return was a thing of beauty. Great blocking, good run.

It was nice to see us clear the benches on both sides. I don't think a single starter on the DL played after halftime, but I could be wrong.

Bottom line, we did what we were supposed to: run up the score on a hapless opponent. We're sitting at 5-4 and should finish 6-6 at worst.

Bama is going to be hell to handle, but I saw some encouraging things after watching their game with LSU. We've got some personnel matchups that can cause them some problems. One big question mark is whether or not Kirkpatrick will be healthy in their secondary. We'll need to play our best, most complete game of the season to hang in there with them. And we've GOT to wrap up and gang tackle Trent Richardson. We aren't going to arm tackle that beast.

Feel free to add your comments.

In Mullen I Trust,

SPD

I did also leave our HC game early, with like 4 mins left, won't explain. So I didn't get to see mini-Favre make his TD. I likes your analysis, SPD. Hoping we shock Bama, since I live in HSV and am True Maroon, but I'm a realist. The Gumps have some deep talent.

These two things don't go together. Your Russell ******** is as transparent as C34's Stansbury hate. Russell had a bad night but Favre had a nice night, seriously?

He only made throws that any 40 year old with a beer gut in the stands could make. He did make a nice little run for the touchdown, but nothing that Jameon Lewis wouldn't have done. I really hope we never have to depend on him. Russell did have a bad game, I agree on his bad decisions, but our OL was letting their DL through quite a bit so his happy feet weren't always unwarranted.

I would really like to see Robert Johnson get some snaps over Ricco Sanders. It just feels like Sanders has nearly as many drops as he does receptions even though I am sure that is not the case.

Happy feet? If Russell plays against the Gumps, that dude is going to have manic feet (and broken legs and ribs). Our pisspoor offensive line will look like matadors waiving the red flag in front of charging bulls Saturday night. Our only hope is to play Relf and attack the corners. I'd love to see us run the triple option.

Whether the Russell lovers want to admit it or not - he was running around back there likehewas under pressure all night when he really wasn't. We'd have good protection & he'd take off like he was about to get sacked. I'm afraid of what he'll look like against Bama.

is at least he didn't ground any of his passes in front of the intended receiver like both Russell and Relf did a few times during the game. I was shocked how many times our QBs couldn't get the ball to our receivers IN THE AIR but rather short hopped it to them for an incompletion. Thought that was pretty pathetic.

But seriously, he was running backward, throwingoff his back foot all night. They didn't appear to be getting any more pressure on him than any other team he's faced.Did he get planted early in the game, that lead to himfeeling pressure that wasn'tthere and retreating almost every pass play from the snap? He looked like a QB that was taking a beating, but I didn't see him get hit too many times. He was definitely feeling pressure that was only coming from inside his own helmet.

Relf looked like the oldRelf, a qb who doesn't have injured ribs anymore (cracked ribs would explainhis play for a 4-5 game stretch). Hope we are well rested and ready togo against Bama. Stop TR and we can win the game. Their passing attack doesn't scare me much against ourDB's. Stop the run and we can win.

I post a completely objective opinion about Russell, but because I have "South Panola" in my username, I automatically hate him & have a vendetta aGAINST him. Nevermind that Mullen said he had happy feet too. Nevermind that plenty of other posters here (including you) saw the same thing. No, I just hate Russell and will never forgive him for ending The Streak. It's the most unoriginal, ignorant attack on my opinion in the book.

I was a huge supporter of our recruitment of Russell. In fact, I was one of the first to say I'd rather have Russell than Garrett, while Garrett was still committed to us. Russell's got the tools to be a great QB for us. But he isn't there yet. And anyone who thinks he is isn't watching the same QB. He's only had 1 good SEC game and 1 mediocre SEC game. I sincerely hope he has the best game of his career to date on Saturday. I want to beat Bama so bad I can't stand it. Hell, I'd love it if Russell becomes the greatest QB in school history? Why? Because State will win a whole lot of games if he becomes that good. And I want State to win. It's that simple.
