Per Marcello.. @bmarcello: Chatted w/ Dan Mullen. He says possible Tony Hughes coaches entire secondary next season, freeing him to hire coach for diff. position.

I hope this means ST coach. We need it

Is there ever a coach who JUST coaches special teams? Maybe a DL coach and make Wilson just DC.

Wilson coached DL and special teams at Oklahoma. Not out of the rhelm of possibility to name a Special Teams Coordinator who also coaches a specific position too. I imagine that's what will happen.

Does Brewster have any old colleagues who want the job? NFL guys? We need some.

I posted earlier about John Hendrick. He coached our DL from 1995-2002, which were some really good lines. He has since added Special Teams to his resume at several places.

Mullen is not just going to stand around and be head coach. Either he is going to call plays-OR-he is going to be the ST coach- you can count on it all day long. He will do one of the two.

I'd prefer he take over playcalling duties and let someone else coach ST's

Very interesting. Lots of possibilities. I suspect whatever move is made, it will be made to help out Chris in some form or fashion.

Job description: coached DL, Brewster-esque national recruiting connections and a big time Smoot-type personality.

Our 17ing defense needs to grow a pair and get nasty and chippy again. I want to see unapologetic cockiness.

after the poor performance and scheming of our defense this year we have to get some help there either directly with gameplanning our having a position coach that frees up Wilson to put more energy into gameplans and schemes. Our defense was MUCH more of a liability this year than even our special teams. Kickoff coverage was vulnerable but apart from that our special teams were at least decent. Defensively though (which is an even bigger part of the game), we absolutely could not slow down above average offenses. Our defensive stats weren't just terrible but that's only because we played a very weak schedule. The last 5 games of the season, when we played real competition, showed us how bad our defense really was.

Agree with "nasty and chippy". Add "brash and bodacious".

Don't forget the "swagger and hungry like a wolf"

But where do we get it if we don't have it?

See this article on Seattle's defense:

The Seahawks have also taken on Carroll's undeniable self-confidence. This is apparent in the chip that rests on the shoulder of each player at all times. I discovered this during my visit when I was confronted by safety Earl Thomas regarding some pre-draft comments made on NFL Network comparing his game to that of Eric Berry. While I was caught off guard by Thomas' intensity, I certainly respect his desire to prove doubters wrong. This was also evident in the ferocity of cornerback Richard Sherman and other Seahawks following the win against New England. Several defenders feel underappreciated on a national scale, and they are intent on proving their worth on the field. Carroll undoubtedly stokes this fire behind closed doors, as it falls in line with his desire to prove doubters wrong by replicating his collegiate success at the pro level.
