Who will Swink hire to lead the program at Spotsylvania High?
Who would even want the Head coaching job?
If they open the job up to the State, I bet more coach's than you think would apply, that's what they need to do

The true question is how long will they give someone to turn it around? Historically, they are changing people every 2 years (on average). Also did they change their schedule up so the kids can build some confidence in themselves instead of always playing 4a or better teams for their non conference games.

There have been some good OL' boy Coaching choices in the past. There have also been those with little HC experience. But what can you expect when the HC gets $3600 a year (all Spotsy County Coachs do. It's in the annual budget plan. Nobody gets more). Makes new hires invariably young.

it's a hard job to fill. Little talent. Few athletes. General apathy. The oppents cheerleaders usually outnumber Knight fans in the stands).

The schedule is what it is. They play in the Battlefield. There's just no changing that. Fluvanna and Culpepper County is hardly a difficult OOC. EV? Why not? Just 4A. At least it's not Massaponax or Riverbend.

Here's the issue at Spotsy. They are painfully embarassing to watch. can't block. Can't tackle. No speed. But the Coach should be able to make them competitive and play with heart for all 4 qtrs. Do that and you will get time to build a program. Do it not and they'll shop for another.

Spotsylvania has been "massacred" over the years with zoning that has sent the top flight athletes to Massaponax and Riverbend. The $3600 stipend you referred to also speaks to the importance that the school board administration places on football and athletics. There are no former football coaches in upper administration who care or understand what it takes to build a high school football program. This has been an issue for nearly 20 years.

Just remember that Coachs like Hall, Oliver and Ludden recieve the same stipend so do not lose hope. They are proof it is possible to still have a good program. Just need the right Coach that loves the game and the boys. GL

Stipends are not a huge piece of the puzzle. The best jobs and most stable programs have compensation packages and benefits that go far beyond the basic stipend. I am not saying high school coaches are getting rich, they are not, however, in terms of salary, teaching schedule(free periods, weightlifting, etc.), number of assistants, community support structure, etc. there are clearly differences between desirable jobs/locations and others.
