I went back 4 pages and saw nothing about it.

Are they going to cancel the game this year?

Hope not.

Sorry if it was discussed.

I think he's referencing the concern that's being tossed around on social media that the Spring Game is an audition for other teams to tamper and snag good players via the portal

That makes sense. Maybe it's time to let that tradition die too.

I've attended the spring game for many years. Trust me when I say that, as a result of bland play calling, green jerseys, extensive playing time for guys who will never see a snap during the season and mismatches between the red and white teams, any scouts there from other teams are much more likely to fall asleep from boredom than to discover some gems to pursue through the portal.

The bottom line to me is that if they cannot hold a freaking scrimmage four months before the first game, then they must not practice actual football in the fall either. The special teams play certainly looks like they don't practice that. They may never actually go live for anything on special teams from what it looks like to me. And our tackling and lack thereof indicates we aren't going live much either.

I actually love how inconsequential the spring game is. Super cheap to drag everybody that wants to go. We can stay, leave early, whatever. Party atmosphere like a game day and see people I only see there. I look forward to seeing the latest highly touted stud players but the scrimmage is pretty vanilla so my impression good or bad is usually meaningless.

It is the 8th home game.

They have to have it and the Lincoln economy will freak out.

I'd have full on contact spring game, I think it helps in alot of ways..

I'd throw a green jersey on a player if we are real thin there, or if the caliber of the player can't be replaced...

Who was it who wouldn't let BTN televise one of the Spring Games? Was that Pelini?

This is why I like the Spring Game. Football fix in April. Have some drinks, hang out and watch a little ball. I would throw in good for recruiting.

If I was you I would pull all your support of Nebraska football if no spring game. No financial support and no message board support.
and if I was you I'd have made much better choices in my youth so I didn't turn into such a soft little ***** in my old age

Meh, I have gone to a few Spring games over the years and had fun, but I would rather have had Blye Hill and Demetrius Bell available for last season than watch a glorified scrimmage.

Injuries happen in practice scrimmages whether there’s fans watching or not.

While I agree about having Bell/Hill, players have also missed the season from injuries sustained in practices in the Spring. Do we do away with spring ball all together? Players get injured in fall camp. They get injured on a Tuesday practice during the season. You're never going to fully prevent injuries.

Why don't we have a regional preseason scrimmage in August against another program.

They could televise those things.

Why would they cancel?
You npw have 105 players. Some very highly paid players that you really do not need to play in a game like that.

Also getting 2 full OL and DL to play a whole game on each side is not near as easy with the 105 restrictions.

Is it really worth it? No. Does Nebraska make more than most places? Yes, but they can still do something fan related like an open practice but I think Spring games will be a thing of the past soon.

No reason to risk injury to paid players. Its where we are now with college football.

It's like the NFL still have a flag football game for the pro bowl. Stupid idea that no one watches that risks injury to valuable players. It's just a bad idea for a game of any kind.

The spring scrimmage is a valuable teaching tool for new players. There’s little to no difference in the chance of injury between this scrimmage and the scrimmage the week before.

Other than it is another scrimmage. I could care less if there is a spring game or not. Win some dam games in the fall. However, it takes. Playing a meaningless game in April really means zero. I am tired of winning the off season and we need to start winning in the season.

Remember when Cally was coaching and on the broadcast he said something like the offense will pretty much take what they want? Pretty bold talk back in the day.

They should at least have a skills competition or something. See how far DR can throw it, fastest player, etc

Sucks for fans that don't live in Nebraska.

Nothing to bridge the season.

If they are gonna scrimmage in the spring, no matter what, why not publicize it? If you are worried about adding another scrimmage, drop one earlier in the spring. It’s not that hard.

Or are you proposing drop all scrimmages because they are meaningless? Help me understand your point here…

Some of the podcast yackers think this is more about the Spring Game being audition film for the portal. Another team sees a role for a player NU has slotted as a depth piece as a result of the game, and then the tampering and dangling of NIL dough begins. I think that is probably overblown, but then again, I'm not the coach that has to explain a sudden transfer portal entrance of a valuable kid to the media.
As for as injuries, unless you are going to get rid of live scrimmage periods altogether, the risk of season ending injury exists. Hell, kids have blown knees during drills. But Spring Game injuries hit a little harder.
It seems last year the "good" kids played a half or so and then the younger kids got a chance. I really don't see this as rocket science. Scrimmage #1 offense/#2 defense vs. the inverse. Go good on good and OK on OK. Then OK on OK plus the others in the second half. Keep the clock rolling and shorten the game. In reality, I don't think the coaches care much for the Spring Game and would be just as happy without it. It's for the fans and at NU, the fans really want a proper Spring Game.
