we are staring at a McCardell/Harrison Gay rotation...How can Denico not see we have no option at Weakside de

We really need Beard and Siddoway, in case one doesn't pan out, because we have no option there

think Steven Bench could be a option we turn to, staff loved him back during summer camps.

on a message board as it is to see out in public.

Out of curiosity, what overall grade would you give this class so far? I'm thrilled about James and Evans being on board along with a couple others, but the rest of the class seems to be really underwhelming. It seems like we were unable to do much in three areas where we really struggled this year(OL, WR, and TE) and there are apparently a lot of projects. Do you think there we've got some underrated guys committed or is this just a mediocre class at this point?

plus 2 potential star DTs in Evans and James. IF, and its a big if, we can add Ward, Autry, R. Brown, B. Brown, Alford or Liggins, and Beard or Siddoway then I would think we would all have big smiles on our face come signing day. Also, if we can't get Ward maybe we can add AJ Jefferson who is a pretty decent player as well. A lot of how we feel about this class will have to do with how we finish on these last 6 or 7 spots.

I think this class is solid. Some of the sunshine pumpers on TOS will tell you we have the greatest defensive class in MSU history. I'm not buying in to that, especially since none of these guys have enrolled. <div>I will say that I think the top 5-6 guys in this class will be impact players. Will Redmond and Quadry Antoine will be beasts. Both will probably end up being 4 star guys when thenextreevaluation rolls around.</div><div>I've heard very, very, very promising things about Autry leaning our way (and Damien Jacobs). Those are both 4* JUCO guys that would make an immediate impact. Hell, Autry is the 2nd highest ranked JUCO recruit in the country. I don't think we will get Channing Ward. Beni Brown is a 4* LB that we are in the lead for. One reporter at the MS/AL game said he was the fastest LB on the field. Right now I think we are in good position to get Richie Brown as well. One of the pay services has our current class ranked 25. I think that's about right.</div><div>
</div><div>Who knows? NSD could be full of DDDY nominees.</div><div>

Look about right. The Jacobs guy-DT from EMCC-is obviously high on us from his official visit reports. I have no clue if we get him or not, but the way it sounds, we are definitely in it for his signature, which would help us out big time with Autry.

if we get Autry and the 2 Browns and maybe even Jacobs that it could potentially be the best defensive class we've every signed even without Ward. Of course the proof is always in the pudding when they hit the field. Don't know why we can't seem to get Ward to give us some love. He's only 40 miles away and our program currently probably has more momentum and more reason for optimism going forward than we've ever had in the history of the program. Plus I've heard his Mom is a student at MSU. Still doesn't seem to have much positive effect with him.

If we are talking about a grade based on needs, I am not too thrilled as we stand today...maybe a C+, because we absolutely have to sign a JUCO tackle. A stud WR and DE are also huge needs right now.<div>
</div><div>Overall class at this time, probably a solid B, weighted towards the defense. I never thought we would sign another DT class that would match Cox and Boyd, but Evans/James/Washington is ridiculous. Redmond and Antoine are studs. I think Perkins and Jiles are going to be good players. I agree about the "best defensive class ever" hyperbole being a little much, but if we did somehow sign Autry/Jacobs/Ward and even one of the Browns, then I think you could make a strong argument. </div><div>
</div><div>On the offense, I really like Desper, Carter and Holley. We still dont have our stopgap tackle, but we are finally building some serious depth on the OL. Grindle is a player. Outside of that, I think the rest are just going to have to be "wait and see" players, because we just don't have a lot to go on with the others. We really need to see where Grindle/D. Evans/Barnes, etc. end up position-wise as well. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have any real targets to land us another skill player. </div>

Jacobs is still pretty high and committed to UT.
I don't see any reason why Autry would not come, we have a glaring hole at DE.

..that Favre's replacement can be a walk-on.

Given MSU's history of coaches taking a cavalier attitude towards signing QB's, Mullen needs to recruit his *** off to sign the best QB available.

Hate to see it get so bad next year, we have to pull Cameron L. off defense & put him @ QB (Oklahoma State actually recruited Cameron L. as a QB).

I'm assuming Alford either goes Bear or Pro MLB. Liggins might be far too out of reach but if we have to reach down to get Mays then he'll be no worse than Favre butstill be alittle taller.

Knowing what we know now, and how the guys we signed have performed (if they made it in), how would we feel about those classes now? I know that's been done on a national level before, but I'd be interested in what someone who actually knows about Mississippi State has to say. And by "someone" I mean someone other than me or Jeremiah Short.

..either would be a solid commitment, but Mullen can't do like Croom & give up on signing a QB just because the top 3-4 guys you want signs else where.

You start watching films on little-known country boys, or look @ juco's.

Being down to 2 QB's is a serious concern & should be treated as a serious concern.

We'll probably never have to use anyone other than Russell andPrescott next year. And we'll probably be finewith those two. But that'sway too big a risk to take to go into a season with only 2 viable options at QB.

Up to 9 DL, 3 LB's, and 7 DB's. Of course, some of these athlete types like Evans, Barnes, and Perkins may play offense. I wouldn't sign a QB in this class unless his name is Anthony Alford, just gonna be hard to find one worthy of signing this late in the process. The 2 biggest needs in this class are pass rushing DEnd and OT. So far, we haven't gotten them on board, but the fog is starting to clear, and we'll know soon on Beard, Siddoway, Autry, and Jacobs. I think Beard and Siddowayare an either or situation now bc of the Junior commitment, but we would definitely take Autry and Jacobs. In high school guys, you're looking at narrowing your focus on Alford, Ward, BBrown, RBrown, Jefferson, and Alonzo Moore. Numbers are tight, and no one really knows what the hell is going on as far as how the numbers play out. </p>

Like you said -I'd like to see someone more qualified take a stab at it. But I've somewhat tried to keep up with our classes since the mid-Croom era. I don't get too deep andsome of it's based on my opinion, but it gives you a decent comparison of classes.

Irate every player as being worth 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 points.

0.5 = started but quit/ transferred, or played sparingly (back-up or a few starts)
1 = normal starter
2 = NFL caliber starter

2004 - 23 commit, 19 enroll, 10 finish, 9.5 points
2005 - 27 commit, 22 enroll, 15 finish, 16 points
2006 - 24 commit, 21 enroll, 14 finish, 14 points
2007 - 34 commit, 28 enroll, 18 finish, 21 points
2008 - 25 commit, 22 enroll, 14 finish, 11 points
2009 - 27 commit, 24 enroll, 21 finish / here, 22.5 points
2010 - 26 commit, 24 enroll, 22 finish / here, 9 points
2011 - 22 commit, 20 enroll, 20 finish / here, 1.5 point

What jumps out to me is how bad the 2008 class was, and there's really no room for it to improve. We could potentially have no NFL players come from that class. The 2010 class really depends on how the LBs, OL, and DBs develop. But I see it topping out around 15-18 points. And the 2011 class just doesn't have a lot of potential because it was so small.

Dee Arrington and Morrow both have NFL potential I think, but they are at least starters. I say at least 3 points, maybe 4.

As for starters, and I'm just kind of going in order of our commit list from Scout: Taveze Calhoun, Derrick Milton, PJ Jones, Justin Malone, Kendrick Market, Dak Prescott, Darius Slay, Josh Robinson, and either Redmond or Knox will all be starters I think at some point. 8-10 points there.

Then add Maiden, Fosselman, PrestonSmithand John Harris as spot starters who would get .5 points. 2 points there

Then for guys we don't really know about, there's Zac Jackson andRufus Warren. 1-2 points there

That grades out to be somewhere between maybe in a 14 to 18 range, which really isn't that bad. I think this class has some potential, but you are right in saying that there really isn't much star quality as maybe some other class.

ETA: Nicejob on the rating system. I think that works pretty well.

Thanks for putting this together, and I'll add a few things.

Q. Antoine- Based on Deke Belavea's ( I'm sure i spelled his name wrong ) comments, does the nightly sports show and high school football from New Orleans on WWL radio, Antoine is the biggest steal from the state of LA. He said LSU should've signed this guy and MSU was getting a great projected LB. Don't know if it will happen but he thinks he will be at OLB in college.

T. Calhoun- I had a chance to see him play in a regular season game and last years all-star game. He was by far the best DB out of the group at the all star game which included Whitehead.

B. Brown- In one of his interviews he said we were the only school recruiting him at RB. Based on videos I watched he would make an exceptional RB for our team.

X. Grindle- I cannot see us working him at RB if he played only DB at the All-Star game. It leads me to believe he should be put in the DB group.

T. Bell- There were some comments from summer camps that he would get a look at LB. He is a monster and I don't see it happening, just throwing in what I heard.

QB Position- What happened to the QB from Miss. College that walked on last spring? He was listed as an athelete before and I don't remember his name. He did work exclusively with the QBs.

Fosselman- Last observation also from last years All Star game. Fosselman ran the cleanest routes for team MS and was open almost every snap. It seemed the QB wanted to throw to Singleton and Brassel and really didn't check down on any other players. I hope this game is an indication of his future potential.

Thanks again for taking the time to put this together.

..it's 2012 & Russell is out with a knee & Dak is out with a shoulder.

"Starting QB for MSU vs. Alabama...Chad Bumphis in the Wildcat formation."

The Las Vegas odds makers could never establish the line to that game, because it would be increasing in Bama's favor on an hourly basis.

Our projections are as useless as Rosebowl's. I mean based on what they actually did. And there will be lots of subjectivity in that, I know.

Again, I am not about to do it, but I would say a scale like this:

1 - never contributed/has not contributed in any meaningful way Ex: Eric Richards, Templeton Hardy
2 - played some, nothing fantastic Ex: Robert Elliott, Zach Smith
3 - started for a good portion of MSU career; good enough to play and be a solid contributor but not All-SEC type Ex: Relf, Brignone
4 - started for most of MSU career; would start/get lots of playing time at any SEC school Ex: Charles Mitchell, KJ Wright
5 - Huge contributions throughout MSU career; elite SEC player Ex: Dixon, Sherrod, Fletcher Cox (we don't have many of these)

Just curious (I don't really keep up with recruiting until about a week before signing day)... I was wondering if there were any good USM recruits we may go after now that Fedora is gone and they are coach-less. I saw where DJ Thompson from Pearl mentioned he was looking around again.

We are hopefully looking strongly at D Thompson from Pearl, that kid can play. He may not end up being a star, but he has the potential to be a big play maker. I know the Buzzard fan was very excited about him, even saying Fedora and Company thought he was one of their best recruits to date. That's not saying much, but Fedora does know talent at the WR position typically.

comes out about the same.

2009 is the best class we've had in recent years (McPhee, White, Cox, Banks, Boyd, Gabe Jackson, Whitley, Bumphis, Skinner, Lawrence, Russell - lot of multi-year starters)

2007 is second best (Sherrod, KJ, Relf, Saulsberry, Lawrence, Green). More than anything this class built decent depth. Not as many stars as the 2009 class.

2006 & 2005 are about even. Both had a couple of guys now playing in the NFL plus a few other 3-4 year starters. Similar to 2007 except just smaller (thus fewer points).

2004 & 2008 were both horrible no matter how you spin it. Mitchell, Broomfield, and Clark are the best from 2008. Titus Brown, Gabe O'Neal, and Glanton are the tops from 2004. Both classes had an often injured player that showed flashes when healthy(Mario Bobo / Tobias Smith).

1 - played some, nothing fantastic. Top out as either (a) solid role players or (b) starters by default, easily replaceable with a handful of recruits that would have been available instead and only starting because of a major personnel weakness. Ex: Robert Elliott (role player), Zach Smith (starter by default)
3 - started for a good portion of MSU career; good enough to play and be a solid contributor but not All-SEC type. Presumably good special teams player before stepping into starting role. Ex: Relf, Brignone
4 - started for most of MSU career; would start/get lots of playing time at any SEC school Ex: Charles Mitchell, KJ Wright
6 - Huge contributions throughout MSU career; elite SEC player that requires other teams to game plan around them Ex: Dixon, Sherrod, Fletcher Cox (we don't have many of these)
Don't know if this would give an accurate measure overall, but trying to reflect that warm bodies aren't worth that much, and that elite players really change the dynamics of a team.

I mean yeah, Relf was the QB, but we threw the ball 10 times. It also works (in similar form
) with GTech, Army, Navy. I am just saying, in a punch we could just line up a former QB athlete.

It's not like I want it to happen, but I also don't want to waste a scholly on a crap QB.
