I've played there once before at the The Oaks course, however this time I'm playing on The Azaleas course. Any difference, or anything of note to know? Looking forward to it, going to be a beautiful few days for golf.
Little more picturesque on the Azealas side. Last time I was there(late summer) the bent greens were super soft, to the point where we were making ballmarks with short pitches.
That place used to be my groups go to for a weekend trip until we went to Muscle Shoals last weekend and played the those two RTJ courses.
I personally like the Oaks course more. Maybe just because of what lowbird said. Their attempts at keeping the bent grass alive went to the extremes in keeping the surface soaked. I don't think they have bent grass any more though but not sure.
I'll definitely will be keeping that in mind on approach shots and chips. I didn't know they were bent grass greens on that side. If I remember correctly, The Oaks had bermuda greens.
Next time you do a trip with your group, you may want to consider Old Waverly. They have several different cottages/condos for various numbers of guests. I was fortunate enough to play there just last week and the course was in great shape. The greens were like ice but rolled true.
Just like low said, greens are ultra soft. I'm not sure if it's Oaks or azalea, but their is an elevated par 3 with golden moon on the horizon wher all three people I played with actually sucked the ball off the green because of backspin. This included my dad who generates very little clubhead speed.
GTA Waverly is definitely on the list. My roommate was in PGM and a cart guy out there during our last couple of years. Seemed like a decent college gig. He'd catch some good tips and always kept our fridge stocked with leftover beers. I don't think I've ever left a beer in a cart, never understood that one.
