I would agree except for one small thing. If he's projected that high at the end of the season, and not just in clickbait articles, our chances of retention reduce.

But even then, we're talking about real draft evaluation vs mock draft articles.
So, would it be a good thing for him to have a terrible season and Carolina ends up 5-7 but Sellers comes back for 2026?

In my opinion, the worst case scenario is; Sellers has a great season but the offense around him and the defense is weak so Carolina ends up 5-7 AND Sellers leaves for the NFL.

Ha, true on the worst case. But no, it wouldn't be good for him to have a terrible year.

Best case, he has a great year, we duplicate last year, but he's graded as still needing work so he comes back for another year.

The fact remains that these Mock Draft have been a part of it since Mel Kiper came on the scene. They are going to be done and someone has to be named in them. None of these guys really deserve it as of yet, but they have to rate them somehow. When I look at the names included along with Sellers (Manning, Klubnik, Nussmeier, Allar, the tall guy that transferred from California to Indiana), I don't see the big deal. Given that those are the names out there, I say, yea, that is about right when Sellers is included in that group. Now, we have a whole season ahead. Some of those names are bound to fall. Some others are bound to emerge. However, it's just crazy talk to me to think that Sellers can't be included in the names that the media is putting out there. Of course, he has things to work on. However, most freshman QBs do. ....and things are not like they used to be. It very well may be scenario where his name will still be one of interest even if he is not a finished product. That's professional sports right now. We all just saw it with CMB. At least I saw it anyway. It seems I am about the only one here still watching the NBA.

That post wasnt directed to you. Why are you following me around like a little girl? (Wasn't that how you phrased it?)

As for the list, I agree, none of them really deserve it yet, and the authors are all just finding names to put in there. Hence 18's comment that I repeated about them being just to generate clicks. One more reason why I dont rate players based on them.

That was done by mistake. Just happened to be the last one on the list. Really wasn't interested in your two cents, but thanks anyway.

Ha. Not interested enough that you quoted and responded to me. And even finally admitted to me being right about the lists.

Definite step up from replying to other posters with insults about me so you can transparently pretend to not be engaging.

I hope Sellers lives up to expectations. He can run. He's strong. But, I'm not sold on him as a passer. Beamer, right after the Clemson game, if memory serves, called him the best player in college football. I just shook my head and thought, well, that's Beamer. We'll see.

I only engage with your sorry self because you try to play internet warrior and try to throw out what people should or shouldn't say. You like to have the last word. So I am posting now because I know you will post again. Your control freak gene will make you do so.

Internet warrior? Like when you tell people when they can or can't reply to your posts? And then tell them to "do something about it"? Like that?

And you and I fit well then, if I like the last word and you always run away when exposed.

So tell me, were you ‘sold’ on Connor Shaw as a passer? If you say yes then I’ll just let you go, but Shaw’s three best attributes were his legs, his line, and an awesome set of receivers that made big time plays on the reg. It dim sure wasn’t his arm or passing skills.

Gamecock fans have taken to being snarky about our players, coaches, and whatever else might pick up some attention.

On that day, at that time, Sellers WAS the best player in college football. If he will be again remains to be seen, but Beamer saying that is not SMH worthy.

Not to speak for stock, but the question was if Sellers' arm was first round draft pick worthy. Shaw was never argued to be that, was he?

But yeah, we've been known to get snarky. We also have been known to get very overly optimistic in the summer before a season. Bt that's true of all fan bases.

Look, I was texted yesterday morning about Sellers being number one and number 12 in two mock drafts. As I texted back to him: "Let's hope he produces big this season. But only half of first-round draft choices ever meet expectations. Thus, by extension, you can expect only 50-60% of expected first round picks to ever be picked in the first round".

You mentioned Connor Shaw. Was he picked in the first round of the NFL draft? If he was, I was snoozing at the time. And regarding Beamer, he said Sellers was the best player in the country. not just that day. He told the media right after the Clemson game that if they did not vote for Sellers for the Heisman, they were "out of their minds". So, YES, that was "SMH worthy".

Some Gamecock fans prefer to look at our program and players as they choose. Others of us have been around the block dozens of times and thus keep our emotions in check.

I think we're all hoping Sellers plays well enough this year to be a top 10 draft pick. I wouldn't say I'm skeptical, as he certainly showed the ability the latter half of last year, but there have been so many players in college football who had a great year and then never replicated it. Besides that, I'm just reluctant to bite too much on offseason hype. Midway through last season, no pundit would have even had him getting drafted at all, so pushing him all the way to a possible top 10 pick based on half a season of play just feels like a knee jerk reaction. The media love to build a guy up, so they can tear him down.

For me, I just won't be surprised either way. If he balls out all season like he did the latter part of last year, I won't be surprised at all. If he regresses, I won't be surprised at all.

Agreed. Good thing we have a history of a strong offensive line. :)

Seriously, as has been said, Sellers made a lot of plays off broken plays. I dont want to see that as our primary offense.

Now that teams know what he's capable of, I think teams will be cautious not to over-pursue.

We will see teams putting a spy on him on obvious passing downs and focusing on containment in their rush as well as pressure. His passing doesn't scare anyone right now.

Teams and critics have been saying this same thing about Lamar Jackson for like 8 years now. Further, I have no idea what some were expecting when Sellers took the field last year. Watching the kid in high school, you knew he was raw. South Florence's offense was just run game and deep balls. So, I knew he could throw the deep ball. The question was whether he could adapt to the requirements of intermediate and shorter throws on the next level. Further, besides TE Josh Simon, all of our receivers were incoming transfer portal guys, freshmen, or guys who had not established themselves at all. Frankly, I was braced for days like the ODU game and even worse. However, you saw progression from Game 1 to the Kentucky game and the Offense was able to make some plays to complement the Defense as the season wore on. After the Oklahoma game, the offense had progressed to competent and flat out saved us in the Missouri game. I get your point that how a player plays one season doesn't mean he will play that way going forward. However, I don't see it as unreasonable for fans to be encouraged by Sellers and the offense given their progression over last season.

Nobody has been higher on Sellers than me (except for maybe after the ODU game). I had to start a thread last preseason saying it was actually ok to be excited about Sellers since many were down on his potential: https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/yes-its-ok-to-be-excited-about-sellers.1400160/

I have not said one thing critical of his projected play this upcoming season. All I've said is that he has to prove he can replicate what he did down the stretch last year. There's a loooooooooong list of college players who came before him who were unable to do that. That doesn't mean he can't or won't...he just hasn't done it yet.

To my comment above, it's just an observation. I didn't say anything about Sellers, as you suggest when you say critics have been saying the same thing about Lamar Jackson. I said something about the teams we're going to face. There's no way around the fact that he caught teams off guard last year with his ability, especially his crazy knack for escapability. He just isn't going to catch anyone off guard this season. Teams we play are probably already game planning for him. Teams are going to make adjustments. Just a simple observation.

Again, that doesn't mean he can't or won't ball out this season. But this year he has to do it with the other teams knowing full well what he's capable of. This isn't like Peyton Manning entering his junior or senior season. At that point, you know exactly what you're gonna get each and every game. Sellers is still very raw and has a strong half season under his belt. It's just a reasonable approach with Sellers. Am I still excited about him? Very much so. COULD he have a Heisman-caliber season? Sure. Am I just assuming it's a foregone conclusion that he's going to have a Heisman-caliber season? No.

And everything I'm saying is what he's being told by coaches: You can't live on last year. You have go out and prove it this year.

This.

And I think we should cool the lamar jackson comparisons till he does something to put himself in that conversation. Otherwise we're falling for the same preseason hype trap.

It does make me wonder though, if we all agree he needs to prove it, and the end of last season doesn't mean he will necessarily play that way this year, what was all the whining about?

Yeah, it doesn't mean we can't have great anticipation over what Sellers will do this year. Jackson average 5,9 ypc his first season. Sellers had 4.1 last year. But Sellers was considerably better as a passer than Jackson was his first year.

Maybe I'm still licking my wounds from telling all my schoolmates that Taneyhill would win the Heisman his senior year, but I tend to be conservative on predictions.

Jackson didn't start that full season as a true freshman, and had the added stat of almost 1000 yards on the ground with another 11 td's in that partial season.

If you look at his first full year as a starter, it's not close. But that comparison is hard because the lack of redshirt year for one, and the partial start for the next year for the other.

Ugh, but down the stretch includes the bowl game. And i have concerns about the play calling with that.

Yeah, the bowl game raised a lot of questions.

Sellers was running like a mad man against in our previous games but seemed reluctant to take off in the bowl game. Don't know if it was play calling or if they got in his head too much about running vs passing. Either way, it didn't produce good results.

Illinois had a spy that did a good job. I think Sellers had 11 rushing attempts in the game but didn't get anywhere. We got out-schemed in that game.

That answer makes me more nervous though. If it was just our coaches handcuffing him that'd be one thing. If it was just a matter of Illinois scheming to neutralize him, that's more troubling.

Illinois played a bend but don't break defense with one spy, sometimes two. Sellers had a higher number of passing attempts. Sellers wasn't bad as a passer, 24-34 for 260 yds, but we would get bogged down in the red zone and Beamer was impatient. If Beamer just takes his FGs, we win the game. I know we didn't have the best FG kicker, but he could hit the ones less than 40 yds. Felt Beamer lost his composure in that game. You can't expect the team to be composed when the guy at the top is losing it.

Yes. I will make this comparison to Lamar in that the bowl game felt like a staff wanting to encourage his passing game. Imho, you play to your players strengths.

We are in trouble if that scheme change alone bogged our offense down, as we won't have last year's defense backing up an offense scoring field goals.

I don't like Beamer's jumping up and down, hugging players, high-fiving them, etc. I guess I'm old-fashioned and conservative. I don't know if you remember Jim Carlen when he was here or Tom Landry when he was the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I like the business-like approach by a Head Coach. Joe Morrison did not show much emotion.

I'm glad to see you acknowledge that when a DC had a chance to scheme to stop Sellers running, he was able to. Every DC Sellers faces this season will have watched that tape and will put a spy or two on Sellers on every play. He rushed 16 times for 19 yds against Bama. The Clemson game was his best rushing game, 16 carries for 166 yds. He had 11 rushes for 19 yds against Illinois. They knew his passing wasn't a big threat so they made sure they contained his running, the exact thing every DC will scheme for this coming season. Sellers is most dangerous when he can scramble and break contain and then take off running when the pass play breaks down. DCs know that now and will prepare for it.

If Sellers passing doesn't improve and/or the OL play doesn't improve, Sellers will probably have a step back in production this season.

I can appreciate the "cheerleader" aspect of some head coaches. Heck, with Dabo and Shane, their "ceo" status kind of leaves them as motivation on the sidelines.

The problem is where to draw the line. The bowl game came across bad, and Shane looked kind of silly with the "hold me back" thing. I used to make fun of that Clemson coach for the get back coach they had. I had a lot of that given back to me by Clemson friends after the bowl.

I'm glad we have a P4 opponent to start the season in Virginia Tech. We will see how our new OC, Shula does. VT's DC is new as well. Supposedly, this season is considered "pivotal" for Brent Pry there, his 4th. So, I have no doubt we will get their best shot.

I acknowledged before the season even started that our passing game and Sellers as a passer would be a work in progress. You are throwing a raw QB out there with no experienced receivers. My point has always been with detractors is what were you expecting. I thought he and the passing game had a surprisingly good season. Once Sellers got his fumbling issue under control, he protected the ball. 7 Ints. for a Freshman QB with young receivers. I will take take that. Almost 200 yds. per game. I will take that. Even in the Illinois game, Sellers was 24 for 34 for 260 yds, 1 TD, no turnovers. I went back and just finished watching that game due to this thread. I would give Sellers a C+ for that game and the type of game that he needs for his progression. As you said, everyone will watch tape of that game and try to find a way to stop the running game. One narrative I think that is incorrect though is that Sellers was just running all over the place. He had 674 yds rushing. Solid season running the ball, but he wasn't running around every play. He didn't have almost 250 Rushing Attempts, and over 1400 yds like the Cam Newton Heisman Year. I think the coaching staff, for the most part, did a good job with Sellers. I think they could have helped him some more with more drags across the middle in the Illinois game. The Illini's linebackers were just sitting there waiting for the run. Give him some crossers in the linebackers face to give them something to think about. That and the Illini's delay of game strategy is what I mean by saying we were out-schemed.
