I can handle keeping McGwire since he has pretty much took his beating and seems to be donig a good job as hitting coach. Really would have liked to have thrown an offer at Maholm. With a good lineup and an average defense I think he could be a 15 game winner.

Edited to add that Im not being a moralist, I just dont want to hear the Cards name drug through steroid association talk more than it already is

What are they saying his contract would look like? I wouldn't mind having him, but it would be a 1-2 year contract with personal conduct clauses in it.

I'd like to sign him for perhaps a year and evaluate him during ST. Let him do AAA @ Memphis

They have Holliday, Beltran, Allen Craig, and Jon Jay as well as Skip Shumaker. I don't see any room for him. Also, he is a defensive liability and is not a good clubhouse guy. If they signed him to a minor league deal, odds are he would not make the team. The only way I could see it being possible is if they traded either Jay or Shumaker- highly unlikely the Cardinals will do that.

He needs to go somewhere that needs a DH such as Oakland or Seattle.

The only moves I could see the Cardinals possibly making are maybe signing someone like Roy Oswalt- not all that likely, and only if his price goes down or signs a backloaded deal- and maybe sign a second baseman like a Carlos Guillen for a year for maybe a millon dollars. The Cardinals budget is tight right now- there are good odds that they do nothing. They would probably have to trade Kyle McClellan to make one of the moves I just talked about- and that is certainly not imminent.
