You are correct! Rita started the year 0 - 3 with non-conference losses to East Moline and Elgin. We had a Pep rally in which Coach W. Urchak went on stage and, let's put it this way, pumped up the student body. SR went on a 5 game winning streak, including the MC game. I believe teams had to have 6 wins to get to the playoffs. And that's when Larry narrowly beat SR at Rita, denying the Mustangs.

It bothers me so much that Rita had recently moved to 77th when I started there. I so loved that entire dilapidated school at 63rd, and especially of course the football stadium and that tiny basketball gym. Fortunately, most of the characters such as Coach Woody moved to 77th; for a guy standing 5'7 and about a buck 145, he was pretty intimidating.

I remember that 87 game vs MC very well. MC was moving the ball all game, but SR held them to that one TD. Conversely, SR did not move the ball that well, but had a couple long TD passes to a very good WR (Kendall ______ ???). I miss those yellow pants worn by MC. To me, nothing epitomized catholic league football more than MC v SR at 63rd & claremont.

I was not at this game. But if you want to be depressed, watch the first 2 minutes of this video tribute to Tom MItchell. Never thought SR would lose at 'The Pit' to BR with John Foley. Got to give Rice credit for that win. I'm not sure the Catholic League was ever stronger than it was in 85. Frankly, Laurence was probably the most talented team, and that playoff game between them and SR was epic as well.

It was said that nobody tried to stop him from transferring. Could lead one to think either hes bad discipline-wise or bad performance-wise.
More a situation where a perfectly good apple was removed from a spoiled, brutish peck.

Yes, I did watch the first two minutes, and many sad memories have recurred. I was at that game. Game was called for a while due to inclement weather. In the end, the parties involved decided not to suspend the damn game. Mustang was up 6 - 0, so I wasn't complaining at the time.

Where was the help? Rita had 2:50 to go and drove down to the Crusader 30 yard line. With a few seconds to go, SR went for the long FG. For some unknown reason, the ball boy handed a plastic-looking, dopey-looking football to the official for this FG attempt. Yes, it was clean, but it was abnormal, I tell ya. Something wasn't right about that damn ball. In the stands, we--the students--were screaming about the ball. To no avail, and the rest is history.

Earlier in that year, BR defeated SR 10 - 0 and ruined Rita's undefeated season and Homecoming. In Round 2, prior to that quarterfinal game, Rita defeated Larry on a last second FG. Father Murphy (God rest his soul) closed school for that following Monday!

the last half of the decade was alot of heartbreak for us Rita guys. I was at the 86 game vs. Kenwood. Not exactly the best game to choose as my first SR game. I was at each of the playoff games in 88, and thought SR was going all the way until that final 12 minutes vs. MC. 89 was the most heartbreaking. They beat MC that year in one of the all-time best (and most physical) high school football games. But then squandered a 10-0 lead against CVS. I still remember the pained looks on the faces of the SR players and fans as the kids boarded the bus back to 63rd and claremont. My fat *** on the other hand drowned my sorrows at White Castles with my Dad. Great memories even though most of the game results were disappointing.

Forgive my spelling, but was Foley, Glonek, Ciegelski, Grunhard, Smalagia--among many other--among that class? Didn't Larry have 5/6 D1 players that year?

You are right. And Dean can correct me if I'm wrong, but Laurence had 3 that were originally admitted to ND. I think ND had 6 chicago catholic leaguers in their 86 class. Stan S., one of the least heralded, turned out to be one of the best.

Notre Dame signed eight CCLer's that year: Paul Glonek, Jeff Pearson, Stan Smagala,Tim Grunhard and Mike Harazin from SL and John Foley, Jason Ciegelski, and John Zalewski from SR.

MC had Chris Calloway and Frank Cornish on 85 team and 86 team Nate Turner. My point of reference really starts first MC game in 88 at Marist but know a little prior.

Correct, STL lost 3 offensive starters (QB/OL/WR), 8 starters return (RB/4OL/3WR).
Replacement Jr QB is athletic, great arm, & has good size @ 6'3" The offense won't skip a beat in '16 and the D should improve w/6 returning starters. Heard 1 OL (started as soph) & 1 LB return, both sat out entire '15 w/injuries. Kicker returns. Sophs 7-2 as well. Hard to make a call on reg season though, still missing quite a bit of schedule. From what I gather thus far, looks like; Benet, STR, STI, BMAC, AC, Leo. Green c/o and 2 non-cons other than Redwings are missing. Plus Leo's status remains unknown, so 3 possibly 4 unknowns. Any help would be appreciated.
